In the Fall of 2022, Phil Cook suddenly found himself living alone in a small home at the edge of field and forest in North Carolina’s Piedmont. For most of Cook’s four decades, he had resided near the hearts of the midsized Southern cities and Wisconsin towns he had called home, near the groan of traffic and hubbub of coffee shops. Such close quarters helped make the gregarious Cook a prolific collaborator, from cofounding his own Megafaun to working with The Blind Boys of Alabama, Bon Iver, Hiss Golden Messenger, and endless others.

But Cook’s closest neighbor now was a trailhead, his own alleyway into the woods of Orange County. So he went and listened, enraptured first by the stillness and then by the manifold birds. He began leaving his windowsill slightly cracked each night, so that the dawn chorus greeted him each morning. A zealous collector of voice memos, Cook began recording these tangled bird songs. He slowly joined them. With the sun finally high, Cook would listen to the day’s recordings and improvise in real time on the instrument that remains the first and most steadfast love of his musical life, the piano.

Everything about TWEN is hands-on. Ian produces, engineers, and mixes their albums. Jane designs every visual element, from videos, to posters, to merch. They’ve screen-printed their own shirts, booked their own tours, edited their own films, and built their tour van into a full-time mobile home. Their 2022 LP One Stop Shop wasn’t just a title, it was the truth. Even now, as their reach has expanded to a sold-out Red Rocks Amphitheatre show, opening arena tours, and having played 500+ shows across North America and Europe, they’ve kept full control. It’s proof you can exist outside the system and still make something that is current and alive.

Written across highways & coastlines, their latest LP 'Fate Euphoric' isn’t nostalgic, though it nods to Britpop, psych, and new wave. It sounds more like the past filtered through the noise of right now. If 'One Stop Shop'pointed out the problems of the 2020s from a first person perspective, 'Fate Euphoric' takes a bird’s-eye view, seeking comfort in the cosmic wheel that will always keep spinning. TWEN are a band in flux, and that’s the point. The van is still home, but the studio is wherever the signal feels right. The fate might be uncertain, but for now, it’s euphoric

Hayden Pedigo: man, myth, master of disguise; un-picker, finger-picker, absurdist, perfectionist. An innovator of the instrumental genre, challenger of the stereotypical, son of a truck-stop preacher. His new album, 'I’ll Be Waving As You Drive Away' is, Hayden reflects, not a straightforward solo guitar record, but in a sense “a micro-dose psychedelic album." Unafraid to push the parameters of American primitive, the walls of the album’s world are fuzzed-up and glimmering. Pedigo’s trademark, highly skilled guitar compositions, more intricate than ever, are augmented by influences he’s never been able to achieve on previous records, drawing strongly from the uncanny psychedelia of larger-than-life culture in the American South, so often bigger, stranger, more unnerving than fiction. Throughout 'I’ll Be Waving As You Drive Away', moments of genre-defying, unapologetic exuberance are carefully balanced with delicacy and intricacy.

The human who sings and composes under the name Bonnie "Prince" Billy and acts under the name Will Oldham has, over the past three-plus decades, made an idiosyncratic journey through, and an indelible mark on, the worlds of independent music and cinema. With his highly individualistic approach to music making and the music industry, one that cherishes intimacy, community, mystery, and spontaneity; his brilliance has captivated fans and made Bonny one of our most influential and beloved songsmiths.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy's latest offerings include 2023’s Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You and 2024’s Hear the Children Sing the Evidence (with Nathan Salsburg and Tyler Trotter). He had a cameo role in Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders. BPB’s newest record is The Purple Bird (produced by David Ferguson), and features such giants of American music as John Anderson and Tim O’Brien.

Greg Freeman thrives on finding emotional catharsis and present-day resonance in the eccentric ugliness of the past. His songs all have a palpable sense of place thanks to his urgent delivery and evocative lyricism, which mines history for character-driven tales of violence, loss, and epiphany. On his sophomore LP Burnover, out August 22 via Canvasback Music/Transgressive Records, the Maryland-born, Burlington, Vermont-based artist uses the complicated backdrop of the Northeast to sing of grief, alienation, and the clarity that comes from opening up yourself to love. Explosive, unsettling, and undeniable, the 10 tracks here meld energetic indie rock with an ambling twang. It’s Freeman’s most adventurous and personal yet, cementing him as a singular songwriting talent.

We are 1/4 way through this century - - - now is the time to strum some atomic pop perfection. The new Sharp Pins album Radio DDR is just what the world requires in this new year 2025 - - - every song is a sing-a-long, a head bang-a-long, lost guitars found!

Radio DDR was recorded spring, 2024 by Kai Slater and Sharp Pins band mates in his house on the roof in the basement with all the doors open. It was initially released as a cassette-only delight and immediately caught fire. Everyone wants to beat this tambourine. Radio DDR has taken on a life of its own.

Some say Sharp Pins are Geniuz; others proclaim a Minor New Talent on high. It don’t matter none. If you are busy staying up late watching vampire movies and devouring bowls of chocolatey fruit loops you only know you want to play Radio DDR again. And hear it again. And play it out the window for the birds in the trees.

With I Hope We Can Still Be Friends, his debut for Saddle Creek, Dean Johnson makes a pact with the listener: He will sing you his truth in the most heartfelt and charming way possible, if you promise to keep an open mind.

The title partly stems from the playful way the Seattle-based singer, songwriter and guitarist communes with his audiences at concerts. “I hope you’re not afraid to talk to me after the show,” he’ll say, sweetly, before launching into “Death of the Party,” the album’s seventh song. Centered on the “energy vampire” archetype — the exasperating windbag we’ve all encountered at some point — its lyrics are at once intellectually biting and unmistakably hilarious. His tender voice rings out like the ghost of Roy Orbison or a misfit Everly brother.

Recorded in Leeds at the Nave with Alex Greaves, Come and See blasts off to an explosive start with “Nausea”, giving the concept of Jean Paul Sartre's classic novel of the same name a furious sonic makeover. Guitars screech like sirens, creating a curiously catchy clarion call for an album of raucous reflection.

A breakup feels similar—one path crumbles, while all others remain infinitely possible. How do you write about heartbreak when you’re going through it? Ace tracks every part of it: falling out of love, having your heart broken, and then falling in love again. Pequena Vertigem de Amor — the third full-length in Sergio Sayeg’s expanding catalogue as Sessa — is not just an evolution in the São Paulo artist’s sound; it is a transformation. Like a camera lens slowly zooming out, Sessa’s records reveal a progression from the private, carnal and earth-bound erotic desires probed on 2019’s Grandeza, to an exploration of the limits and possibilities in relationships between people in love on 2022’s Estrela Acesa.

With Pequena Vertigem de Amor, which translates to “Lil’ Love Vertigo,” Sessa’s view turns upward, to the infinite sky, catching glimpses of universality in the intimacy of becoming a father. Sessa says these songs “are a mix of personal chronicles and quiet meditations about life in the face of personal change, of experiencing something so big that you realize your insignificant size in space and time.”

This new perspective and reality remade his personal life and his connection to music: “For the first time I saw music move from the center to the side of my life.” The radical reordering of priorities presented fresh opportunities in his music. “In an interesting way, music became more mixed with my life,” Sessa notes, as he found ways to conjure melodies, lyrics and inspiration from the daily rhythms of life.
