**Mermaid Chunky** are an audio visual duo made up of artists Freya Tate and Moina Moin. Bathing in milkmaid serenity and improvised chaos, the duo boast of pumping trance rhythms, sad Easter time chicks and seriously arousing sax solos. Catching their live performances may cause havoc on your retinas as they are often accompanied by euphoric sculptural visuals and an entourage of sweating puppy’s in frills.

**Cistern** is a rock band from Squamish, BC on the unceded land of the Squamish Nation. The restless souls that make up Cistern, a tight-knit gang of four, are comprised of Noah Varley, Noah Wilson, McKinley Languedoc, and Chris Boys. Cistern play rock music like the best bands formed at the periphery: raw, scrappy, intuitive – a group of friends forging awe and anguish into song. As Ursula Le Guin wrote in her Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction, “it’s a strange realism for a strange reality.”

The bands' most recent release is New Standard. Languedoc stumbled upon a different tuning, jokingly rebranding it as “new standard tuning", and somehow, the gag stuck. On “Crisis”, the band tries to make sense of the tangle of personalities. “Metal Detector” unravels as a hymn for those who have chosen to march to their own peculiar beat. “Pendulum” is high-wire, jittery and tense, a song about seeking balance in a world that won’t let you achieve it. The record is a 5 track display of DIY-rock anthem recorded on an 8 track tape machine.

Cistern is a band defined by tight musicianship, harmonious and dissonant instrumentation, do-it-yourself recording and experimentation. With the band already wading knee-deep into the musical chapter that will follow, expect more saturated, tape-warmth dance riffs to come.”

With the release of debut EP Nowhere Near Today, Tough Love Records welcomes Cardiff-based five-piece **Midding** to the family. The idea for the band was originally conceived by singer-guitarist Joe Woodward whilst writing and recording songs in his kitchen on a 4-track recorder, and over time eventually found help from like-minded friends, Elliot Roberts and Cam Wheeler. The three of them would spend their nights experimenting with cassette recording with the admirable if not challenging aim to recreate the symphonic sounds of Phil Spector on a DIY budget. With growing confidence and having amassed a small catalogue of songs, a few aborted attempts were made to get a live band together before they found help from a second guitarist, Eli Allison, who had recently relocated from Cornwall. As necessity would dictate, the first shows as a quartet made use of a drum machine, but the ideal formation for the band wasn’t truly complete until meeting Nia Abraham, whose live drumming would add a more physical quality to the band’s sound.

At the beginning of 2024, they began working more purposefully towards an end goal with the writing and recording of the five-song Nowhere Near Today EP. Though retaining some of their home recording practices, they also made use of a studio facility based in a disused shopping centre basement that was made available through SHIFT, a local artist collective connected to the band. The acquisition of an 8-track Tascam 488MKII, along with the natural reverb of SHIFT’s empty concrete space allowed for further opportunity to experiment with both cassette recording techniques and their still developing live sound, the two environments permitting an all-too-rare creative freedom. The process was transformative for the group, their Spector-inspired ambitions now taking on a more defined shape that skirted around the edges of psych, noise-rock and industrial-pop in a way that increasingly became their own.

Berlin-based group The Underground Youth have announced their eleventh studio album ‘Nostalgia’s Glass’ and shared the dreamlike video directed by Parker Love Bowling for lead single ‘I Thought I Understood’

Craig Dyer writes: “‘Nostalgia’s Glass’ looks back at the music of The Underground Youth, forming new songs in a style reminiscent of the band’s past, whilst lyrically condemning the nostalgia that the album is itself guilty of. ’I Thought I Understood’ was the first track for the album that I wrote following the above mentioned objective to write about nostalgia, in this song’s case an unhealthy obsession with the past.”

Expanding on the album’s themes, Dyer adds: “When faced with making the eleventh record of your musical projects career, you think long and hard about the direction you wish to take. Do you look at what is currently popular and aim to carve out a space for yourself in the modern music which you currently enjoy, or do you look back at the foundations upon which your band has built its name and fanbase? This nostalgic sense of looking over one’s shoulder to the past ended up influencing both the musical style of this new record and the subject matter of each track.

The aim became to create a collection of songs that paid homage to our back catalogue, whilst implementing all that had been learnt along the way. I attempted to dissect not only the positive but the negative elements of nostalgia, primarily the romanticisation of the past, be it the politics of a country, the controversial legacies of film and musical icons or the sentimental idealisation of long dead toxic relationships.”

We love London and we love the MOTH Club, so after a sweaty, wild All Points East after-party in August, we are coming back this year again and again and again. Yes, three parties, putting our favorite bands and DJs together like we've always done, and like seemingly few do anymore. This first party sets the bar way too high with Sweden's JJULIUS playing live with a full band (his new album Vol. 3 will have arrived just a month prior) and the one and only Maurice Fulton taking us home till close.
