Rough Trade Bristol is very excited to present an in-store Q&A with James Acaster. This unique event celebrates the release of Temps' album 'Party Gator Purgatory' released via Bella Union.

*Temps is a 40-strong international music collective, consisting of artists across multiple genres, fronted by a cartoon alligator.*

*Featuring such geniuses as Quelle Chris, John Dieterich, Joana Gomila, Laia Vallès and Seb Rochford, Temps’ ten-track debut Party Gator Purgatory was produced, curated and devised by UK stand-up comedian James Acaster. Released via Bella Union, this mind-bending opus rose from the ashes of an aborted mockumentary made with Louis Theroux’s money.*

*Vast in scope and scale, and fizzing with an experimental energy, the trippy Party Gator Purgatory manages to blend a host of ideas, guests and moods into an album that draws you into its own unique world. “I became completely obsessed with this project,” states Acaster as he hand-draws the album’s artwork himself, using a trio of highlighter pens, “it was all I focussed on for two years and we ended up making my favourite thing ever. I hope people enjoy it.”*

For our very first excursion outside of Belgrave Music Hall, we have something extremely special in store... In February 2020, comedian James Acaster began developing a mockumentary about leaving stand-up for an ill-advised music career. The pilot saw him recording loops on his childhood drum kit, then-untouched for twelve years, accompanied by a Wilson The Volleyball-esque muse: a cuddly alligator toy he won at a funfair as a child, emblazoned with ‘Party Gator’. When the March lockdowns derailed this project, Acaster invited 40 international hip-hop and avant-garde musicians he’d met through his recent book Perfect Sound Whatever to record over these loops. Adopting the production alias Temps, and an alligator costume modelled after the since-lost ‘Party Gator’, Acaster began collaging these recordings into hip-hop tracks.
