Windswept is the fifth solo album from Photay, the nom de plume of electronic naturalist, experimental-pop beatmaker and composer Evan Shornstein. Initiated when the producer created a synthesizer patch called “wind,” the nine-song cycle is under the spell of the titular weather element, its compositions touching upon the movement of air’s influence on human existence and emotional states, our hopes and dreams. Windswept, home-rave-ready and ghostly with its machines, brings together the various versions of Photay’s trademark sonic warmth and hardware pastoralism.

Eric Goulden is known to many as Wreckless Eric though most are unaware of his prodigious recorded output since his beginnings on Stiff Records in the mid-seventies.His live performances are sonic journeys through time and space. Eric presents himself alone if not simply with electric and acoustic guitars, and electronics of his own making. Recent sets have reportedly focused on his two most recent albums, 2024’s Leisureland and its predecessor, Transience, with readings from his autobiography, A Dysfunctional Success. He tends to do what he wants rather than what’s expected. The former Tigers Jaw member and Gothboiclique founder Wicca Phase Springs Eternal has been the moniker and creative persona of Pennsylvania-based singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Adam McIlwee for over a decade. The name is as enigmatic as McIlwee’s work, a fittingly esoteric umbrella for his ever-growing and ever-evolving catalog of music released at a stunning quality and pace. So it’s with great intention that the name is now also the title of McIlwee’s latest full-length: Wicca Phase Springs Eternal offers the musician’s most finely honed and welcoming songs to date, but it’s more than just a self-titled album–it’s a portal, an entryway into an entire world.

Travis James Egedy, better known by his stage name Pictureplane, is an American electronic musician, visual artist and fashion designer based in Brooklyn, New York. He first appeared in the music scene of Denver, Colorado, making a name for himself at Rhinoceropolis, the DIY space where he also lived.

Cursive is an American indie rock band from Omaha, Nebraska. Stylistically described as emo and post-hardcore, Cursive came to prominence with 2000's Domestica and found commercial and critical success with 2003's The Ugly Organ.

I wish I could take credit for bringing Bill Nace and Haley Fohr together, but the idea was their own. I just figured out a way to make it happen; Covid delayed the inaugural performance a year, until February of 2022, when they played the opening night concert of Frequency Festival at Constellation in Chicago, but the wait was worth it. I was and remain a huge admirer of both artists, musicians driven by gut instinct and for whom nothing is outside the realm of possibilities. Although Nace’s playing might initially hit with gale-force intensity, beneath the lacerating surface is a detail-rich poetry, as one needling phrase or another whipsaw gesture opens up a rich tapestry to slowly-morphing patterns and internal networks of sound. Nace might play guitar or he might choose tashigoto, but it doesn’t matter in the end, because he utterly transforms whatever he touches into something new.

I first heard Fohr in her Circuit des Yeux guise, where she unbound voice throbs at the heart of mini-symphonies, blending primal howls and elegant arias into a devastatingly rich art-pop. I also had the pleasure of presenting a concert where she improvised using wordless voice and electronics that opened up radically different pathways. Their work seemed miles apart but their shared fearlessness seemed to guarantee a creative supernova. There’s no point in trying to pin down or describe what happens when they collaborate, because such encounters are deliriously unpredictable, apart from the promise that what they make together will leave you confused, transformed, and reeling. What more could a listener ask for?

It gives me great pleasure to announce the second/final show of the Fall season of "So, What Do You Think?" at Tubby's in Kingston, New York on Sunday November 10, 2024:

A night of solos and duos with bassist Brandon Lopez and saxophonist Steve Baczkowski in support of their forthcoming duo CD on Relative Pitch, a follow-up to last year's Matanzas (Lopez Trio feat. Baczkowski and Gerald Cleaver). I first Saw Lopez around 2013, taking things apart and putting them back together with a level of commitment that is infrequent; this was in the days of backroom gigs at the Manhattan Inn in Greenpoint, all much to the bewilderment of trust-fund onlookers. He was clearly someone to keep an eye on and I am glad to have witnessed his deep, unflagging motion ever since. His work as a grab-you-by-your-throat soloist is not without a lot of space and attuned listening; I was reminded of the first time I heard Béb Guerin take a solo on record, masterful, gutsy, and capital-R Romantic but also inventively kicking ass. Baczkowski is someone I have listened to and greatly enjoyed on recordings but not seen much in person so I'm extra pumped for the experience.

JP Harris is an American country singer, songwriter, guitarist, and clawhammer banjoist based in Nashville, Tennessee.

Harris was born in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1983. He spent much of his early life between Montgomery and Dadeville, AL, where his relatives had lived since the Revolutionary War. His mother was a teacher and his father worked in heavy construction. When he was seven, his family moved to Apple Valley, California, and later to Las Vegas. When Harris was fourteen he left home after finishing the 8th grade.

After leaving home, he spent time in Oakland, California; he chose the Bay Area as the California punk bands of the 1980s and early 1990s had a major influence on his early musical development, and later spent a year in Arizona where he worked as a sheep herder for a group of Navajo elders.Throughout this time, Harris freighthopped across the US, eventually finding his way to the town of Halifax, Vermont, where he lived for over a decade. He worked as a sheet metal scrapper, orchard worker, farmer laborer, luthier, heavy equipment operator, logger, and mainly as a historic restoration carpenter. He moved to Nashville, TN in 2011.

Six Organs of Admittance is the primary musical project of American guitarist Ben Chasny. Chasny's music is largely guitar-based and is often considered new folk; however, it includes obvious influences, marked by the use of drones, chimes, and eclectic percussive elements.

Tashi Dorji is a Bhutanese guitarist and improvisational musician known for his avant-garde and experimental (read: deeply gnarly, finely arty) approach to music. Tashi’s idiosyncratic take on the instrument, one defined by movement and profound openness to technique, adds up to a post-colonial disembowlment of guitar traditions that stands Tashi next de- and re-constructionist giants as various as Derek Bailey, John Fahey and Bill Orcutt.

Something happened. Between the summer of The Happiest Times I Ever Ignored and the night before Christmas Eve 2023, the music of Hayden Pedigo transformed. Back-to-back months of touring lead to incredible outcomes: First, his chops became more finely honed than ever before, lending a precision and versatility to the songs that would surprise even the most-seasoned Pedigo listener. Second, Hayden lived in these songs, translating them through improvisation and dynamic exploration into emotional juggernauts – instrumental music that sings to the audience.

Landing in his hometown of Amarillo, Texas for the holidays to perform at The Amarillo Globe-News Center – home of the Amarillo Symphony – a gorgeous and beguiling set was recorded in front of a crowd of nearly five hundred people. Put to tape by Nathan and Joe Luscombe, mixed by Davis Hart, and mastered by Stephan Mathieu, Mexican Summer proudly presents Hayden Pedigo’s Live in Amarillo, Texas, an album that could one day be mentioned in the same breath as John Fahey's The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick and Townes Van Zandt's Live at the Old Quarter.

The Ladybug Transistor was formed in 1995 as the home recording project of singer and trumpeter Gary Olson, and by 1999 the group had swelled to include siblings Jeff Baron (guitar) and Jennifer Baron (bass), Sasha Bell (keyboards and flute), San Fadyl (drums), and Julia Rydholm (violin).

This tour celebrates the 25th anniversary of their third full length LP The Albemarle Sound originally released in 1999 on Merge. Perhaps the last great pop album of the 20th century,the Albemarle Sound is like few records from the turn of the millennium, its attention turned to the intricate arrangements of late 1960s pop and the strange and familiar environs of home.  
  
New Jersey's Lightheaded are clearly students of pop in all of its variety, drawing as much from 60s Brill Building song writers as they do from later 60s folk/pop developments and 80s DIY pop. The striking thing is how seamlessly they're able to meld these influences, and the distinctive voice that they've crafted this early in their career.

The Ar-Kaics are back with See the World on Fire, their first new album in six years. It’s also the first release from this newly-minted partnership between Feel It Records and the bands’ own imprint, Dig! Records; with Bachelor Records delivering a European edition. Expect eight new tunes of dark, moody, rollicking garage psych not altogether dissimilar from their previous output (across two LPs and a mess of singles). What you get here is the next chapter. All written and recorded in singer-guitarist Johnny’s bedroom / garage (pictured on the album cover), it’s a concept album based on the concept of making an album—on their own, from the brink.

Benny Trokan:  
You may recognize this fine fellow as the bass player for such acts as Spoon, Lee Fields' Expressions, Reigning Sound and The Jay Vons. Or perhaps you’ve heard the man himself wailing away on several well-received 45s released on Wick Records and compiled on the 2022 digital EP "Hey Lovers." With Do You Still Think of Me, his debut album for Wick Records, Trokan takes the listener through the full spectrum of 60s influenced music: the moody teen-beat bop of “Save a Place,” the garage dwelling angst of “Nowhere to Be Found,” to the sweet soul sound of the title track. But throughout the record, it’s the unique sound of Benny's raspy, vulnerable lead vocal that carries us across this truly stunning collection of modern pop. Do You Still Think of Me is a breath of fresh air from a well-seasoned veteran–unquestionably worth the wait.

Kyle Field is a visual artist and the songwriter behind the 25-years-running group Little Wings. Over the course of more than a dozen albums, he has written a classic cannon of songs that continues to gain listenership to this day. Working without the help of powerful record companies, the songs have earned their place viscerally, person by person, creating a cherished and loyal following around the world. Little Wings continues to release records at an incredible clip and shows no signs of slowing, the songs keep growing. His latest and greatest High on the Glade was recorded with legendary producer Kramer. It’s due out June 7th on Perpetual Doom.
