2024 marks the 20th year since the worldwide release of No Cities Left, the sophomore album from Montreal’s The Dears. Music journalist Stuart Berman calls No Cities Left “the greatest and grandest work from a band for whom ‘epic’ seems too cheap a descriptor,” a seminal album that refines the band’s notorious unhinged onstage catharsis with their lushly-arranged studio sophistication.

This 20th Anniversary No Cities Left show is fronted by founding members Murray Lightburn and Natalia Yanchak, backed by a rock band and accompanied by an ensemble of strings, brass, and winds. As arranged by Lightburn, No Cities Left combines textures and layers of electronic and classical instruments, interspersed with leads from baritone saxophone, tenor saxophone, flute, cello and trumpet between soaring vocals and ripping guitar solos.

In reviewing No Cities Left, NME described The Dears as “a six-piece orchestral rock treat from Montreal, Canada, led by the enigmatic Murray Lightburn and sounding like Marvin Gaye fronting The Smiths while the London Philharmonic Orchestra has a stab at the Burt Bacharach songbook, \[who\] are probably the best new band in the world right now.”

Formed in 1995, The Dears released their first, ultra lo-fi album, End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story, in 2000. The orchestral, dark pop sound and dramatic live shows cemented The Dears at the foundation of the then-emerging Canadian indie-rock renaissance. Their live show was described as “the sonic equivalent of seeing the face of god.” In 2001 and 2002, they released two separate concept EPs Orchestral Pop Noir Romantique and Protest, respectively. In 2003 they released their second full-length album No Cities Left in Canada, and a string of highly anticipated shows at SXSW ‘04 prompted the international release of No Cities Left with Bella Union. Gang of Losers came in 2006, was well received by the press, and was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize. In 2008 the group partnered with Los Angeles-based indie label Dangerbird Records to release Missiles, followed by Degeneration Street (2011), Times Infinity Volume One (2015) and Times Infinity Volume Two (2017).

The Dears have toured the world over, including performances on Letterman (twofold), Jimmy Kimmel, Jonathan Ross and at Glastonbury, T in the Park, Wireless, Montreal Jazz Fest, Siren Festival, Coachella, Austin City Limits, V Fest, Reading and Leeds, Les Inrocks (France), Montreux Jazz Fest, Istanbul Jazz Fest, Pop Montreal, CMW, NXNE and countless appearances at SXSW. They have shared stages with Spiritualized, Broken Social Scene, Daniel Lanois, Rufus Wainwright, Zemfira, Bloc Party, Keane, Morrissey, The Tragically Hip, Metric and Death From Above, to name a few.

Celebrating their twentieth year, this fundraiser reunites Peter with HNH eight years since he took to the stage with The Libertines at the Brixton Academy in the aftermath of the Brexit campaign.  Much has changed in Britain since then. But the certainties' remain: Wherever there is hatred and division, HNH is there to lead and campaign for a fair and tolerant society.  And Peter Doherty remains one of Britain's most important, charismatic and progressive singer songwriters.  In keeping with the spirit of the evening, tickets are capped at £28 + booking fees.  Both HOPE not hate and Peter are asking that gig goers, if able, donate a non - perishable item for a local foodbank to be collected on the night.  HOPE not hate's Chief Executive Nick Lowles says "2024 was a year of exceptional challenges for antiracists and antifascists and Peter Doherty will set the tone and the dynamism we want to take into the next year and beyond;  "we will continue to rise to those challenges, challenging racism, disinformation, division and of course on this night,  food poverty.   We are once more, incredibly indebted to Peter and friends for shared values and commitment."

JUNO Award-winning Toronto singer-songwriter Dylan Sinclair is rapidly becoming a dominant figure in the genre. Hailed as an "R&B king in the making" by Complex and recognized as a “leading voice reshaping Toronto's R&B sound” by CBC Radio, Sinclair's trajectory is undeniable.

Since age 15, Sinclair’s artistic evolution has been punctuated by his profound songwriting and innate musicality. His 2018 debut EP, Red Like Crimson, caught the attention of Jordon Manswell – the JUNO Award-winning Toronto producer whose discography includes hits for Daniel Caesar, Mariah Carey, dvsn, Tory Lanez, and LOONY to name a few – who collaborated with Sinclair on his gospel-tinged 2020 EP, Proverb, which led to Sinclair’s first JUNO Award nomination for “Traditional R&B/Soul Recording of The Year.”

The Filipino-Guyanese artist’s 2022 EP, No Longer in the Suburbs, solidified his rise and saw the 23-year-old staying true to his essence. Noteworthy singles issued from the 2023 Polaris Music Prize-nominated record included “Lifetime” and "Open," the latter of which received a remix featuring DESTIN CONRAD and JVCK JAMES that premiered alongside an official video featuring the three promising stars. Canada’s most exciting metal band, UNLEASH THE ARCHERS, recently ascended to worldwide power metal domination with their dual-concept releases of 2017’s Apex and 2020’s breakout triumph Abyss. Frontwoman and lyricist Brittney Slayes conjured Phantoma’s concept in 2021; before the swarm of pressing commentary surrounding AI and its impending grip on society began to reach an all-time high. Led by the album’s protagonist Phantoma, a Phase 4 / Network Tier 0 unit - model A, the story recounts the trials of AI gaining sentience on a dystopian, near-future planet earth. Via the band’s one-of-a-kind blend of power metal, traditional heavy metal, modern prog and pop sensibilities, UNLEASH THE ARCHERS spin a web of sharp musicality, high sci-fi concept and important social commentary about seeing the brutal truths behind the manufactured sheen of social media posturing. Defying controversy and bringing their imagination to life, UNLEASH THE ARCHERS utilized AI during the writing, filming, and production process on Phantoma, and weaved electronic and synthwave elements throughout the album’s 10 colossal anthems, which - in line with its theme - prove much darker and heavier in comparison to the bright positivity of Abyss. Album opener “Human Era” sets the tone with imagery of a bleak, windswept futurescape that crescendos headlong into the breakneck pace of following power metal bastion “Ph4/NT0mA” - a masterwork of dueling guitar solos and vocal acrobatics. Trad-metal influenced “Buried In Code” lights the way with pummeling rhythms before the album’s path turns dark on heavy metal hardened “The Collective”, with Brittney Slayes’ warm tones inviting the listener to ‘join or stand aside’! Hair-raising first single “Green & Glass” unveils the truth with dynamic verses and progressive-tinged guitar work before the upbeat 80s flavored “Gods In Decay” and the extraordinary balladic anthem “Give It Up Or Give It All” showcase the varied song writing prowess of UNLEASH THE ARCHERS’ modern era. A trifecta of concept closers begins with the moody “Ghosts In The Mist”, leading into the soaring yet menacing “Seeking Vengeance” before closing with the bittersweet tale of “Blood Empress”.

Joshua Burnside is an experimental folk songwriter, singer and producer. He takes influence from alternative electronica and Irish folk, chopping and blending them with a mixture of found sounds, world music and unorthodox production methods. Following an award-winning debut album and an acclaimed follow-up released during the height of the global pandemic, his music lives against the grain, in both style and spirit. Raised in the north of Ireland between the lush drumlins and hills of Strangford Lough, and the narrow entries and alleyways of East Belfast, Joshua’s music has defined and defied the post-conflict society of his home.  

Taking in the economics of existence, family, trauma and renewal, while set against a backdrop of tense electronica and lush Irish folk and traditional songwriting, Joshua has entrenched himself within the fabric of the modern folk canon, alongside the likes of Bon Iver, Ben Howard and Sufjan Stevens. While his award-winning first album Ephrata took in lush landscapes, technological horrors, night terrors and wistful Columbian vistas (set against a bed of Irish folk, cumbia rhythms, and electronica), his critically acclaimed second Into The Depths Of Hell, took a far darker approach. Melding swirls of clanging metallic found sounds, alt-rock, and Irish songwriting traditions were supported by UK and US national radio and international tastemakers NPR, Guitar Magazine, CLASH, The Guardian, The Times and more.  

His third album, Teeth Of Time, sits comfortably and confrontationally between the alt-folk realms of Bon Iver and Sufjan Stevens while retaining the indie singer-songwriter and traditional folk elements of Josh's signature songwriting.
