Chicago synth-pop/indie rock duo Pulsars released one self-titled album before disbanding, with Rolling Stone later praising the debut as one of the 40 Greatest One-Album Wonders and Trouser Press calling it “one of the singular musical accomplishments of the ’90s…a science fair version of Pet Sounds for the computer age.”

Pulsars leader Dave Trumfio (vocals, guitar, synths, production) grew up playing music with his younger brother Harry (drums, synths) in their parent’s suburban Chicago basement. Dave eventually became an established producer and studio owner while continuing to work on his own compositions. A single afternoon recording session led to a set of nine demos, and within weeks the band was opening for Oasis and being courted by a dozen labels. They finally signed with Almo Sounds, a new label begun by A&M founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss and distributed by Geffen. International tours followed, but the band’s momentum was cut short when the label folded unexpectedly.

In 2021 Pulsars re-emerged with Lost Transmissions, a collection of unheard songs and alternate versions of previously released tracks. They are now finally able to announce the reissue of their debut album PULSARS - for the first time on vinyl - in its original form, with the ominous original cover art and including edgier early mixes of some tracks. The reissue will appear in September 2024, with tour dates to follow.

The hammer is one of the most commonly used tools by humankind throughout history, and it’s taken on rich symbolism over thousands of years, showing up in mythology, national flags, political symbols and folk tales as a representation of both industriousness and impulsiveness. For the New York band Closebye, it represents the act of tearing down your old life and building a new one—but, as we all know, it’s a lot easier to knock things down than to build them up again. Self-improvement isn’t as easy as simply taking pilates or meditation: it requires hard work, self-motivation and a willingness to wade into difficult situations.

Hammer of My Own, Closebye’s second album, understands this intimately. The music reflects several cycles of creation and destruction: the band’s reformation after findingthemselves on the brink of a breakup in 2021, the devastation of the live music industry during the pandemic and the joy of its rebuilding. According to singer-songwriter Jonah Paul Smith, the album’s lyrics are preoccupied with ”the struggle to come to grips with self-reliance, with constant shifts of blame, projection, codependency, ending with a new sobering independence, and the realization that only you can be your own savior.”

Mal Not Bad is the project of LA musician, producer and visual artist Mal Hauser.

Venturing into the unknown is frightening. Many artists find a style that works for them, it draws an audience, gets them gigs, and they stick to it. Accomplishing any kind of recognition and holding dearly onto accrued fans is not a task for the faint hearted. The comfortable, paved road, however, was not the road for John Vanderslice and James Riotto.

John began writing and recording as a solo musician under his own name in the year 2000, gaining akind of cult following within the indie scene for his devotion to analog recording and its creative limitations. He worked in the studio he built in San Francisco late at night, striking an impossible balance between managing a studio, touring, writing, and recording his own music. Until 2019, all of John’s records were recorded to magnetic tape, then mastered to vinyl. Most will know him for his musical period between 2004 and 2007 when he released his most critically acclaimed records: Cellar Door, Pixel Revolt, and Emerald City.

John was radicalized during the pandemic. Unable to access analog recording equipment in his studio, John was forced to go digital. In the solitude of his backyard LA studio, he spent long hours experimenting with digital equipment (and often drugs) used by artists such as Arca, Sophie, and Autechre. The man known for his beautifully complex, lyrically deep, melodic records was now creating something entirely different. He attributes this change to falling in love with the freedom that digital recording gave him and having his “ears rewired” on MDMA. He is making music that he wants to hear.

Shannon Lay’s music is shored by radical empathy. After 15 years of writing, recording and performing her singularly gentle songs in venues around the world, the self-taught singer-songwriter is most concerned with how her music may help people in emotional and spiritual need. In a world of persistent change, Lay’s goal is to have concentrations of love and energy in her work that double as a helping hand or a voice whispering “everything is going to be ok.” The singer’s abiding belief is that immense change also means invaluable transformation and permanent relief. Intention is her North Star. Hailed by publications such as Pitchfork, The Guardian, SPIN and Uncut magazine, Lay’s solo albums, including “Geist,” “August”, “Living Water,” and “All this life goin’ down” are noted for their thoughtful and entirely tender reflections on life’s big questions. Her seraphic voice has drawn comparisons to British folk icons Anne Briggs, Sandy Denny and Vashti Bunyan. Though an old soul, Lay aims to meet her listeners in the present. For her, creating a song, a recording or a live performance that is relatable and communal is of the utmost importance for we are constantly in flux and those unknowns, met with compassion, can be beautiful.

Though Los Angeles based artist Alice Sandahl isn’t an unknown element within independent music, her solo work is distinct from her work as a keyboardist and vocalist with rock band La Luz. On solo debut Bright and Blue, Alice Sandahl (La Luz) excavates with unvarnished vulnerability themes of loss, grief, and hope for the future with keyboard-driven music that combines pop, jazz, and the Great American songbook—Nina Simone meeting Harry Nilsson in a smoky bar anywhere in the world. This is the world she returns to in her live performances, giving us a peek into her internal sonic world.

On his latest project, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Particle Kid (J. Micah Nelson) pulls listeners down the rabbit hole to experience the music he’s been making over the past five years. His self-described “experimental future-folk solo project” is releasing a sprawling epic, Time Capsule, taking listeners on a nearly two-hour trip through various genres, ideas and sounds, an eclectic palette of sonic colors, both familiar and exploratory feelings painted together like a collage, as if 90s alt, 60s psych, 70s electric jazz, and some abstract future were all magazines chopped up and somehow cohesively glued together by Micah’s voice and lyrics as well as guest spots from Margo Price, J Mascis and Sean Ono Lennon, among others.

About the artists:

Ricky Berger enchants audiences with a kaleidoscope of instruments, moods, and genres. Described as “Disney after dark”, her eclectic songwriting, melodies, and voice will surprise and haunt you. Ricky's work as a composer has been featured in The New Yorker, DOC NYC, Austin Film Festival, and the Hammer Museum.

Jean-Luc Eldenwood is a Los Angeles based singer-songwriter. His songs carry the listener through time, to vivid landscapes and spectral heights. His debut album “The Welder”, produced by Henry Wolfe, was released in September of 2023. He is currently working on his second album with producer Jonathan Rado.

Malena Cadiz is a lady of the canyon waylaid at a suburban strip mall, acutely aware of how romance shines through even in the moments of grit and desolation. There’s something Didion-esque about Cadiz’s storytelling as she crafts deeply personal vignettes that reveal greater narratives about the world we live in.

We are excited to welcome back I Speak Machine for a special Damaged Disco Halloween event. Musician/performer Tara Busch and filmmaker Maf Lewis have earned a devoted fan base touring with legends Gary Numan and L7, along with industrial music heavyweights Curse Mackey & SINE. Their explosive multimedia live show reflects the intense anger & beauty of the music while keeping its darkly tongue-in-cheek undercurrents intact.

Holy Sun Opera House is classically trained soprano and drummer Krissy Barker (Object as Subject) and composer dl Salo (A Story of Rats, Saint Genet). Together they weave symphonic synths and operatic vocals with heavy drums into music that evokes joy, terror, anger, love, and grief in a dreamlike fashion.

With resident DJ DAT68 spinning minimal wave, dark disco, industrial, and post-punk.

L.A.-based band Creature of Doom performs a sort of musical alchemy, lending new emotional texture to our most self-sabotaging impulses. Made up of bassist/singer David Baldwin and keyboardist/singer Jacquelyn Sky, COD injects soulful melodies into dark, synth-driven sounds. “The idea for Creature of Doom is all about not being able to get out of your own way,” says Baldwin. “It’s all about being able to laugh at that and celebrate it, instead of just wallowing in it.”

Originally formed as a solo project in 2020, Baldwin recorded and produced the debut EP Tears of Joy, mining inspiriting from artists like The Stooges and Frank Sinatra. Mixed by producer/engineer Ali Chant (Perfume Genius, PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding, the result is a strangely exhilarating and endlessly unpredictable form of alt-pop, imbued with equal parts dramatic grandeur and raw emotional honesty.

Hornsbee is a project from songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Erick Eiser. Erick is a native of the Coachella Valley in Southern California and has spent most of his musical life touring and collaborating with other artists.

Currently living in Los Angeles, Erick has delved into a deeply personal project, writing songs in the intimate confines of his home studio. Inspired by memories of his family, childhood friends, and the profound journey of marriage. Each song is an ode to the relationships that have shaped Erick's life, celebrating their joys and complexities with honesty and sincerity.

As the early-morning sun melts its way through the verdant forests and out over the cresting waves of the Pacific, the rest of the world fades away. Jordan Topf grew up in that golden landscape, and that home of Santa Cruz has always lingered in the back of his mind even as he traveled the world with a variety of bands and writing and producing for other artists. So when he decided to utilize the isolation of the pandemic by moving into a house in Northern California to write solo material, the subject matter came rushing back to him. “I wasn't inspired to write about where the world was currently at, so I went back in time,” he says. “I hadn't ever written about the place where I grew up, the early memories that shaped who I am today, and I realized there was so much I’d left unsaid, so much nostalgia, so many stories I’d never shared until now.” After crafting the songs that would become his debut release, Topf decided to name the project Windser, in honor of the street he grew up on. Delving deeper into memory, he named the EP after the way his dad described Santa Cruz: Where the Redwoods Meet the Sea.
