‘In Light’ serves as the follow-up to Cunningham's 2023 album ‘Frame’, which concluded its cycle with a series of reworks by Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Anohni). That fruitful collaboration paved the way for a new partnership when Abrahams connected Cunningham with Luke Smith (Keaton Henson, Depeche Mode, Foals). The connection proved instant. "We were very aligned as people and shared some fundamental musical philosophies," Cunningham recalls.

This alignment became the foundation for an album that delves deeper into Cunningham's personal and creative consciousness than ever before. Known for his indie-folk-inspired singer-songwriter music that envelops emotions and moods in intimate, breathtakingly beautiful soundscapes, Cunningham has built a massive following over the years, amassing more than half a billion streams. But with ‘In Light’, he wanted to push boundaries. Inspired—and unsettled—by the rapid development of artificial intelligence, he sought to capture the essence of raw human creativity.

The result is a collection of ten tracks, recorded over five weeks in Tottenham, North London. These songs—captured as single takes with minimal editing—immerse the listener in a profound stream of consciousness. Musically, In Light offers a luminous blend of gently pulsating organic production, soaring melodies, and Cunningham’s signature masterful guitar work. The arrangements, understated yet dynamic, respond instinctively to his voice, weaving in unexpected key changes, moments of distortion, and atmospheric flourishes.

Collaborators include Leo Abrahams, who provided additional electric guitar parts, and drummer Liam Hutton, production and mix by Luke Smith, mastering by Katie Tavini, and visual design by Gary Barber.

Gizmo Varillas, the British-based Spanish singer-songwriter, has created 'The World in Color', a work with which he impressively continues his enormous musical development and personal journey. With his elusive sound, he combines influences from Latin, Afrobeat and pop, enriched by the finely chiseled guitar style of John Frusciante, the melodic tenderness of Paul Simon and the relaxed grooves of Jack Johnson.

His lyrics, characterized by simplicit and depth, are reminiscent of the spirituality of Bob Marley and always carry a message of universality and humanity. After three acclaimed albums, including Out of the Darkness (2020), and over 300 million Spotify streams, Varillas has expanded his career from insider tip to critical darling and successful world pop star. His distinctive style and personal touch not only earned him placements in commercials, TV series and soundtracks, but also a loyal, worldwide fan base.

The World in Color is Gizmo's most personal work to date, inspired by formative events in his recent past: the loss of his father, his wedding, moving with his family to Brighton - back to the sea, which has accompanied him since his childhood in Santander. These personal changes are reflected in songs like "Ojos Nuevos" and "Desde el Otro Lado".

Gizmo Varillas remains a tireless pioneer who always follows his own path. His extremely detailed music is not characterized by standard templates or interchangeable productions. He plays most of the instruments himself, complemented by selected guest musicians, creating an unmistakable sound that captures the diversity of his influences.

'With The World in Color', Gizmo Varillas shows that music is not just an art form, but a universal language that connects people. His songs are small works of art full of cinematic soundscapes, imbued with emotion and authenticity. They tell stories of loss, hope and the beauty of the moment - and take the listener on an intimate, global journey. His music embraces the world. And somehow she also hugs the listener.

Von Liz, the somewhat tongue-in-cheek self-proclaimed Godfather of Pissed-off Pop, is a resident of Berlin by way of Tipperary, Ireland. Sacred Contractions is his second album, preceded by 2022's #ourextinction.

Von Liz, Finbarr Lanigan by birth, is descended from Dublin punk rock royalty Liz is Evil, but now flies solo, releasing music on his own P-oP record label. The album title was inspired by witnessing the birth of his son - the songs are relics of everything Lanigan finds infatuating and infuriating.

We're excited to host a stripped down in-store performance by Austrian duo Cari Cari to celebrate their new album 'One More Trip Around The Sun' which is released on 7th March 2025.

The ticket bundle includes entry to the in-store and a physical copy of the album (CD or Yellow LP) that can be collected at Rough Trade Berlin on the night of the show (26th March). Cari Cari will also sign the albums for you after the show.

Cari Cari is Stephanie Widmer (Vocals, Drums & Didgeridoo) and Alexander Koeck (Vocals, Guitars). The duo lived in London, Hamburg, and Madrid before releasing their debut album Anaana. They were called “the lovechild of The Kills and The xx” (IndieShuffle, US) “with the raw grit of a Cat Power record” (BestBefore, AUS) and “a pinch of Ennio Morricone” (FM4, AUT). Since their inception, Cari Cari have been tirelessly working to create their own world, carefully crafting everything from their music to their artwork, videos to set design in-house. This meticulous attention to detail has earned the band a loyal following; Rolling Stone Magazine called them “the biggest discovery of Primavera Sound Festival,” their die-hard fans sold out 1000+ capacity rooms across Europe, and their debut album was praised by the likes of NME, KCRW, Rolling Stone, BBC Radio 1 and many more.

The second album from Sabrina Teitelbaum, aka Blondshell, borrows its title from a 1986 poem by the cherished American writer Mary Oliver, titled “Dogfish.” In the poem, Oliver grapples with the idea of telling one’s own story: how much to share, how much to keep for oneself — all questions Teitelbaum asked herself while writing 'If You Asked For A Picture'. “There’s a part of the poem that says: I don’t need to tell you everything I’ve been through. It’s just another story of somebody trying to survive,” Teitelbaum says. “Something I love about songs is that you’re showing a snapshot of a person or a relationship, and showing a glimpse into a story can be just as important as trying to capture the entire thing. Sometimes it’s even truer to the entire picture than if you tried to write everything down.”

In the time since 'Blondshell', the image of Teitelbaum’s life has changed considerably. As the accolades accrued — late-night TV performances, countless year-end accolades, landing on Obama’s Best Songs of 2023 list, covering Talking Heads for A24’s 'Stop Making Sense' tribute — Teitelbaum spent two years on the road. She played 150+ shows in support of her debut, including major festivals and a tour with Liz Phair on top of her own sold-out headline dates. This rootlessness naturally impacted Teitelbaum’s relationships with others and with herself. “When you travel a lot, you see different possibilities for who you can be,” Teitelbaum says. “So there were a lot more questions coming up. What do I want my life to look like? Maybe it’s just the nature of being two years older, but I’m more comfortable with nuance now, and I’m more comfortable with gray areas.” There’s an open-endedness to where 'If You Asked For A Picture' lands: it’s a no-skips, triumphant sophomore record that captures the unresolved process of figuring out who you are, too wise to suggest that it has a definitive answer.

Rough Trade Berlin and Herbert Music present Piano Day Berlin 2025, an in-store on Saturday 29th March 2025, curated by Piano and Coffee Records.

Live performances on the night come from Norway's Vetle Nærø and Poland's Zuzanna Całka. In an intimate setting, they will present works that reflect the piano’s evolving voice—bold, introspective, and deeply expressive. It will be a space to listen, connect and experience the instrument in all its nuance.

The ticket price includes a copy of the 'Echoes' compilation on CD which can be collected at the event.

Vetle Nærø (NO), a pianist and composer from Ålesund, Norway, blends classical influences with contemporary minimalism to craft a distinctive musical voice. Beginning his formal piano studies at nine, he was shaped by Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Philip Glass, and Arvo Pärt, while also exploring jazz. He composed his first piece at 14 and, by 18, released his debut album By Heart (2018), a raw, spontaneous recording. His subsequent albums, Introspection (2021) and From Moments (2023), reflect his evolving artistic identity, with the latter marking his most personal and expressive work. Nærø continues to refine his sound, creating compositions that convey deep emotion and quiet intensity.

Zuzanna Całka (PL) is a Polish pianist and composer whose music blends classical aesthetics with modern techniques inspired by film and electronic music. Using piano and synthesizers, she crafts immersive, multi-layered soundscapes driven by improvisation. Her debut EP, Late Night Takes (2023), featured on Nils Frahm’s Piano Day playlist, established her as a distinctive voice in contemporary piano music. Her latest work pushes boundaries, fusing tradition with experimentation to create hypnotic, trance-like compositions. In 2024, she performed at festivals across Europe, including OPIA, LAS, and Summer Contrast, and was featured on KEXP’s Pacific Notions. She began 2025 with a performance at ESNS, continuing to evolve her deeply expressive and exploratory approach to music.

Albert af Ekenstam is a Swedish indie singer-songwriter whose music blends post-rock atmospheres with deeply personal storytelling. Since his debut album 'Ashes' in 2016, af Ekenstam has gained international recognition for his reflective style, marked by emotive guitar work and haunting melodies. His music often explores themes of love, loss, and self-discovery, influenced by the early loss of his mother and recent personal challenges, including the passing of his father and a significant separation.

After a period of creative silence, Albert af Ekenstam returns with 'Ghost In Us', a powerful new album created in collaboration with producer Filip Leyman and artist Sumie Nagano. This album reflects his journey through hardship and renewal, cementing his reputation within the indie music scene as an artist who brings raw authenticity to each track.

'viagr aboys' is the fourth studio album from Viagra Boys, scheduled for release on 25th April via their own label Shrimptech Enterprises. It's another masterpiece for a band that only deals in masterpieces.
