Shot over six years in the mid-nineties by legendary photographer Richard Sandler, The God of Times Square is a portrait of the “Crossroads of the World’ at the beginning of its transformation and end of the millennium, told through the words of its denizens, particularly the various street preachers, proclaiming myriad salvations, that populated every corner. Completed in 1999, the world of The Gods of Times Square, now over two decades removed, seems to exist as if in a dream, one of many treasured, vanquished New York demimondes.

An artist whose medium is language. For more than 30 years, Jenny Holzer's name has stood for a conceptual art that questions our perceptions and the way we are influenced by media and politics. Holzer has made LED signs - typically identified with advertising - her trademark. These blinking, flickering text displays, designed to captivate and sway passersby, have been repurposed by Holzer since the early 1980s. Through her art, she shows us again and again how thoroughly seduced and manipulated we are by the visual and textual stimuli that surround us every day. "Text has different effects in different materials," says Holzer, which is why she is always finding new ways of presenting it: Whether chiseled into stone or projected onto rivers, oceans or buildings, her texts always elicit powerful emotions.

Sally Potter's dazzling interpretation of Virginia Woolf's novel follows the fortunes of a young aristocrat from 1600 to the present day, as he changes sex and discards his biological and cultural destiny along the way.

Tilda Swinton, in one of her signature roles as the titular, androgynous lead, heads an eccentric cast encompassing such diverse figures as Billy Zane and Quentin Crisp. It's also the film which saw Sally Potter emerge from an avant-garde notoriety into mainstream recognition, with a lavishly designed spectacle that earned numerous awards and two Oscar nominations.

ORLANDO 

A jolt of adrenaline shot straight to the heart of 1990s British cinema, this darkly funny adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s novel was a major breakthrough for director Danny Boyle, producer Andrew Macdonald, and screenwriter John Hodge. SOMETHING WILD

On the eve of World War I, Zurich and Vienna are the setting for a dark tale of sexual and intellectual discovery. Drawn from true-life events, A Dangerous Method takes a glimpse into the turbulent relationships between fledgling psychiatrist Carl Jung, his mentor Sigmund Freud and Sabina Spielrein, the troubled but beautiful young woman who comes between them.

A DANGEROUS METHOD 

Aquamarine is the story of Claire (Emma Roberts) and Hailey (Joanna “JOJO” Levesque), two 13-year-old best friends who embark on the adventure of their lives when they discover a mermaid (Sara Paxton) named Aquamarine in a swimming pool. Aquamarine had washed ashore after a big storm battered the small town Florida beach club where Claire lives with her grandparents. Claire and Hailey are trying to come to terms with Hailey’s impending departure: She’s moving to Australia with her marine biologist mother after this last weekend of the summer.

AQUAMARINE 

Francis Ford Coppola returns to the original source of the Dracula myth, and from Bram Stoker’s immortal gothic romance he orchestrates a dazzling, feverishly wrought visual opera. In an astonishing performance that sees him grow from old to young, man to beast, Gary Oldman stars as the devastatingly seductive Transylvanian prince who, after centuries alone in his crumbling castle, has grown bold with desire, his taste for humanity drawing him out of his seclusion. When he meets Mina (Winona Ryder), a young woman who appears as the reincarnation of his lost love, the two embark on a journey of romantic passion and horror.

BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA 

The preternaturally gifted director and choreographer Bob Fosse turned the camera on his own life for this madly imaginative, self-excoriating musical masterpiece. Roy Scheider gives the performance of his career as Joe Gideon, whose exhausting work schedule—mounting a Broadway production by day and editing his latest movie by night—and routine of amphetamines, booze, and sex are putting his health at serious risk. Fosse burrows into Gideon’s (and his own) mind, rendering his interior world as phantasmagoric spectacle. Assembled with visionary editing that makes dance come alive on-screen as never before, and overflowing with sublime footwork by the likes of Ann Reinking, Leland Palmer, and Ben Vereen, All That Jazz pushes the musical genre to personal depths and virtuosic aesthetic heights.
