CLUB.THE.MAMMOTH

Best known on as the manic drummer of Strange Cages, and more recently Jealous Nostril, ELLiS·D spent ten years flailing his limbs across the tattered kits of UK and Europe’s basement DIY scene before starting out his solo project in 2021. Leaping viciously between psychedelic jangle, disco-infused kraut rock and taut post-punk attack, the intense energy found in the drummer-turned-frontman’s live performances mirrors the tongue-in-cheek, post-2016 nervous hysteria that run through his lyrics, driving at the heart of today’s doom-laden culture on the brink of nervous breakdown.

After signing with DIY label Crafting Room Recordings, the energy found in ELLiS·D’s live shows was replicated in the studio with an abundance of releases in 2022 notching up two EP’s and four singles in the space of 12 months, along with sell out shows as part of a first UK headline tour.

North London outfit Fake Turins explore the psychedelic strut of New York City in the 70’s, using their strength in numbers to provide an immersive experience, the 11-piece unit explore noise, disco and funk through an unrelenting groove.

Fake Turins have been tipped across the board by press, summed up by So Young Magazine as, “lyrically subversive yet audibly untouchable”, with DIY noting their “cyclical, propulsive dancefloor groove”, and by CLASH as, “a truly multi-faceted piece of music \[that\] feels like the entry point into Fake Turins’ extraordinary world”. Radio support from Steve Lamacq (BBC 6Music), Gemma Bradley (BBC Radio 1), John Kennedy (Radio X) and Amazing Radio on both sides of the Atlantic has seen the band’s stock rise.

Motherhood’s newest LP, Winded, dives headlong into a narrative that explores the natural world as it mirrors human suffering. With their home province of New Brunswick’s dramatic vistas as a backdrop, the avant-punk trio spin a yarn about navigating a straight line through a storm, “persevering—perhaps for no good reason.” With colourful, hip-hop influenced lyr-ics floating over relentless, complex rhythms, Motherhood tackles heady metaphors with ease, whipping through sweet fuzz-pop, sludgy stomps and ragged breakneck punk to deliv-er a 9-track album that pulses, stings and washes over the listener.

Winded heralds a compositional departure for Motherhood—there is more sonic space, lit-erally more air in these songs. “Musically,” multi-instrumentalist member Penelope Stevens explains, “we let air become its own force.” It was written in empty spaces, too— in shut-tered local haunts during the pandemic lockdowns of 2020. Recorded in a small analog stu-dio in blustery Memramcook, NB, Winded was produced by Kyle Cunjak alongside the band, mixed by Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier, and features guest vocals from Les Hay Babies’ Julie Aubé and Katrine Noël.

Motherhood has been setting deep thoughts to rippin’ music since they were kids in the backwoods, and their tireless boundary-pushing has built a catalogue brimming with bold experimental work. Winded, for all its turbulence, marks an evolutionary bloom for the band, and proves that, although they continue to shapeshift as unexpectedly as east coast weather, they remain unmistakably and unwaveringly Motherhood.

Margaritas Podridas is a rock band formed in Hermosillo, Sonora, which consists of Carolina Enríquez (bass/vocals), Esli Meuly (guitar) and Rafael Armenta (guitar/drums). Their debut album "Porcelain Mannequin" was released in 2018, available on all common music platforms and on vinyl.

Their second album "Margaritas Podridas" was released in April of 2021 and they have been very active since, playing important shows in Mexico and in the US, such as opening for IDLES in Mexico City at Palacio de Los Deportes, festivals such as This Ain’t No Picnic (Pasadena, California), Ruido Fest (Chicago,IL) and opening for the Melvins in Los Angeles.

Their latest single “No Quiero Ser Madre” was released recently in August, bringing back the punk and raw sound that defines the band. Margaritas have recorded important live sessions such as Seattle's KEXP (available on YouTube) and VansChannel666, and they are currently working on the recording of their third album.

In 2023 so far they have already announced a show with The Smashing Pumpkins in Mexico City at Foro Sol among other relevant bands and artists like Deafheaven and Turnstile, as well as big bands from Mexico such as The Warning and El Shirota. The festival will take place in Foro Sol which is one of the biggest forums in Mexico with almost 60,000 capacity.

Margaritas are one of the most active and outstanding bands from Mexico’s rock scene and they have plans to continue touring around the US, Europe and Latin America with the purpose of expanding their crowd and sharing their music and contagious energy with the rest of the world.

Mannequin Death Squad are a two-piece, power punk band from Melbourne, Australia. The duo has toured extensively across Australia and the UK since their inception in 2016 and have shared the stage with many including: The Exploited, Bad Religion, Anti Flag, Frenzal Rhomb, British India, Slaves (UK) and Amyl and the Sniffers to name a few.

Mannequin Death Squad are gearing up for a momentous 2023; with plans to release their second album as well as tour the UK, Europe, Australia and Japan.

Melbourne post-punk outfit PINCH POINTS play clean, angular guitar harmonies, mechanical riffs and belted-out group-vocals, all at turbo speed. Their 2018 cassette ‘MECHANICAL INJURY’ and 2019 LP ‘MOVING PARTS’ gained international acclaim and were released in Australia, France and America. 2019 saw the band tour across four Australian states with Tropical Fuck Storm, support bands including Surfbort (US), Amyl and the Sniffers, Viagra Boys (SE), The Meanies, Hard-Ons, RVG and Cash Savage, and perform live sets on 3RRR and PBS.

Their high-energy live set scored them spots on the 2020 Golden Plains and Grampians Festival lineups. In late 2020 they were named Best Breakthrough Act by Music Victoria. PINCH POINTS’ sophomore album PROCESS was released by Mistletone, Exploding in Sound (US), and Erste Theke Tontreager (EU) in 2022 and was awarded Music Victoria’s ‘Best Punk/Rock Work’. Following a tour of Regional tour, an EU/UK tour in July/August, and supporting IDLES for their sold-out Australian tour, in June 2023 PINCH POINTS will be playing their first headline shows in NSW and QLD since 2019, as well as returning to Northcote Social Club for a hometown show. PINCH POINTS will also be touring the EU/UK in July/August 2023.

The Muckers’ debut album, ‘Endeavor’ comes on the heels of frontman Emir Mohseni taking refuge in New York City from Iran. In his native country, performing Rock music was forbidden and had been relinquished to the underground since 1979. In the face of adversity, Mohseni never let up his ambition, and upon landing in the USA, he formed a four-piece group that quickly impressed the crowds with their fresh guitar licks that echo both the early days of MTV and the alternative artists of the noughties. This sound won them critical praises from many including Jack Saunders who gushed on his BBC1 show, “you won’t be able to get enough of it I promise.” The album was also nodded by their peers including Tame Impala’s Jay Watson & POND’s James Ireland who remixed stand-out track “So Far Away.” The Muckers are now embarking on a tour across Europe and the UK to perform their live show which Rolling Stone once praised as “a call to fans to kick the dust off of their souls and boogie.”

Mexican duo Lorelle Meets The Obsolete make a very welcome return on June 16 with their sixth album, Datura. Recorded at their home studio in Ensenada, Baja California, it was mixed in Canada by Jace Lasek of The Besnard Lakes and mastered in Australia by Mikey Young of Eddy. Current Suppression Ring and Total Control. It’s a short, sharp shock of a record with no unnecessary adornments and no fat on any of its eight songs. Gone are the psychedelic wig-outs found on previous releases, replaced with bass-heavy post-punk grooves inspired by the roots of The Congos, the no wave of Ike Yard, the industrial hip-hop of Dälek and the dark modular moves of Hiro Kone, all while harnessing the elemental power of Jon Hassell’s Vernal Equinox.

Strangely, it was nostalgia that inspired the change. The duo marked their tenth anniversary in 2021 by playing reworked songs from their back catalogue and sharing videos online. The new arrangements saw them swapping between synths and guitars, and this – as well as Lorena’s two acclaimed solo releases as J.Zunz – has informed the new set-up.

Jace Lasek was the perfect person to bring the ive in the room feel of the album to the fore. “That’s one of the things I’ve always loved about The Besnard Lakes’ records,” says Alberto. “And I really think he brought that to Datura. The only note we gave him before the mix was ‘we want this album to sound big and aggressive’.” It worked, that’s exactly how it sounds.

Not really surprising for a record that covers cultural colonialism, imperialism, conflicting opinions, intense emotions, strange dreams and insomnia.

The title refers to the genus of plants often associated with ancient rituals that are also sometimes used as poison or hallucinogens.“We liked the idea of a flower that opens at night,” says Lorena. “A type of Datura grows all over the neighbourhood where we live. People try to get rid of them because they are afraid of their dogs eating them, but they always regrow again and again in the same places.”

A bit like Lorelle themselves, then. Datura is their fourth album for Sonic Cathedral and their sixth overall. We last heard from them at the start of 2020, when they followed the previous year’s acclaimed De Facto with a new EP and set out on the road in the US, wending their way to a slot at SXSW. History had other ideas, however, and they were left high and dry in upstate New York, resorting to a Crowdfunder to enable them to get home before lockdowns came into force. The band was paused.

“At some point in 2022 we decided it was time to write new music and everything flowed easily,” says Alberto. As life returned to normal they played shows, firstly in Mexico and then, earlier this year, they finished what they started three years ago and toured the US with SUUNS.

Now, finally, they are set to flower once again with Datura, their most direct and dynamic album to date; proof that nature really is healing.

Lorelle Meets The Obsolete

Spirit Award is the moniker for Seattle-based singer/songwriter Daniel Lyon. The band's vision has always been to make something with intention, love, vulnerability, raw emotion, and authenticity that captures the human spirit. The sound has morphed into a feeling and sound that is motorik, psychedelic, fuzzy, ethereal, driving, and aggressive but still maintains some pop sensibilities, citing the work of Arthur Russell, Neu!, and Suicide among their inspiration.

The new album, "The Fear" is an exploration of the supernatural, love, dreaming/waking, and most of all facing the things that scare you or you think you can’t do, all encompassed in a warping and changing landscape. Shedding your perceived notions of what you think life or the world is and being open to new ideas or experiences. "The Fear" is intended as a meditation, a release of energy and putting positivity and motivation for creating love and joy, challenging what you were raised in or what society tells you to believe. Finding what rings true to you based on your experience, enjoying the journey with plenty of room to ask questions and entertain the mystical.

Gitkin’s music exists somewhere between primal, rootsy memory and distant exotic yearning — A dusty bordertown where the familiar blends imperceptibly into the enchantingly foreign. After a long and fruitful run as a bandleader with relentlessly touring party-rockers Pimps Of Joytime and a Grammy-nominated country blues collaboration with Cedric Burnside, multi-instrumentalist Brian J set out to “explore tonalities I’d never messed with,” as he puts it.

Reviews of Gitkin’s first two LP’s grappled with descriptors, tagging it vaguely as “cinematic” and comparing it favorably with Khruangbin. True, the music is largely wordless, emotionally evocative, and guitar driven. But it possesses an alluring alchemy all its own.

Gitkin’s first release, 2018’s well-received Five Star Motel, amply demonstrated his ease with earthy funk and comfortably-cut rhythm. On his follow up album, Safe Passage, the itinerant guitar slinger broadened his already rich palette with melodies informed by Greek and Middle Eastern modalities, Peruvian Chicha and Tuareg Saharan guitar styles. No gimmick, this juxtaposition of gut-bucket blues and funk low-end with unexpectedly twisting lead phrases highlights the intense flavors found in each savory ingredient.

Gitkin’s production radiates character and warmth, leaning on soft-focus vintage mics, dubby spring reverbs and the quirks of an analog tape machine. Gitkin is slated to release his third full length album on March 17, 2023 with singles dropping leading up.
