KAMILAH PRESENTS: DARK SKIN + COCONUT OIL SINGLE RELEASE SHOW
Dark Skin | Coconut Oil was written as an ode to the beauty in women but specifically in young dark skinned women who struggle with self love in the face of society’s misperceptions, shaped by racism and colorism, about their complexion. The song is a celebration of dark skin; a reminder to those girls of their beauty and a reminder to us all, regardless of skin color, that beauty does not belong to a singular complexion and neither does struggle with self love and feelings of acceptance. The song incorporates the rhythms of Junkanoo, a traditional cultural festival in Kamilah’s homeland The Bahamas, which, in her experience, can offer meditative, healing qualities. This performance is a reminder of the beauty we all have (outside and in), a call for us all to abandon the notion that beauty and acceptance belong to a single group of people and a celebration of (dark skinned) black girl magic. Supporting Kamilah on this intimate evening of music will be JudahThaLion.
