On tour from Vienna, Austria, Tiziana Bertoncini & Thomas Lehn are legendary figures in the free music / free improvisation sphere. Lehn’s highly original approach to playing the EMS Synthi A has garnered him recognition as one of the greatest synthesists of our time. Bertoncini is an exceptional violinist & composer, known for her sound art & acousmatic works. Their duo has been active since 2002, with performances across Europe & releases on Another Timbre, Moravská Galerie, & others. In concert, they operate in abstract territory continually exchanging roles with an approach rooted in tension/release, intensity, & expressivity.

Opening the evening is the duo of James Ilgenfritz & Leo Chang, featuring two custom electro-acoustic setups. Chang performs with VOCALNORI, a system that amplifies sounds through gongs, & electronically processed piri & taepyeongso (Korean double reed instruments). Ilgenftriz will play contrabass augmented by the Autonomous Mechanical Instrument Array (AMIA), a family of mechanical “characters” who respond to data transmitted via Mari Kimura’s MUGICTM motion sensor.

Leni Kreienberg & Matthew Ryals are premiering their new duo melding processed vocals & modular synth. Kreienberg’s work uses electronics to create & extend instruments, & imagine relationships between objects, people, machines, & locations. Ryals’ music encompasses improvisation, generative composition, chance, & cybernetics.
