Unmoor Kiva is a trio formed in 2018 by guitarist Gemma Thompson (Savages), vocalist Adam Sherry and drummer Sam Sherry (both of duo A Dead Forest Index). The band formed over a love of late 1950's modal jazz and the early ballads of Nina Simone.
Adam, Sam and Gemma first began writing together for a work titled In What I'm Seeing; The Sun, a site-specific piece written for the gallery space at The Barbican Centre for Doug Aitken's Station To Station Festival (2015), which involved the musicians of Savages and A Dead Forest Index performing as one ensemble. Gemma Thompson and Sam Sherry continued to work closely together as instrumentalists and developed an improvisational, open-ended approach that informed a new way of writing - resulting in Gemma Thompson's first solo release Bashan EP1 (2017). In the same year Adam and Sam Sherry were invited to create a purely vocal work in collaboration with the Italian dance company Dewey Dell in a work titled Deriva Traversa. The music for two-voices was written in Matera and Cesena and was directly inspired by the folk music of Sardinia after travelling throughout the Barbagia region, researching the polyphonic voices of the Cuncordu and Cantu a Tenore.
After being based in Bristol over the summer of 2018, Gemma, Sam and Adam have recently returned to London after finishing writing towards a collection of six songs that will appear on their first record. The band are working closely with engineer James Trevascus at Invada Studio.
