Our next highlight of the summer is the AYỌ City Festival NRW which will take place on 30 July at @junkyarddortmund.
The focus of our festival is on different styles of popular music and contemporary art from the African continent and its diaspora.
WHY the AYỌ CITY FESTIVAL in Dortmund????
Music genres that originated in African and Black diasporas and were shaped by their pioneers and protagonists are extremely popular in Berlin. From hip hop to reggae, to Afrobeat(s) and jazz, to house and techno; these and many more genres are celebrated (in normal times) by thousands of people every weekend in numerous clubs and venues.
A large number of Black artists and artists of African descent, both born in NRW and people who have moved here, have become an important pillar of the city's creative scene.
Singers, DJs, dancers, poets and painters enhance NRW with their art. At the AYỌ Festival we would like to introduce you to a small selection of these wonderful people.
AYỌ-JOY
The word AYỌ comes from the Yoruba language and stands for "joy". The festival aims to create awareness of the diverse, contemporary, urban, popular African & Afrodiasporic music genres and showcase how important and indispensable they have now become to the music and cultural landscape in Berlin.
With the AYỌ Festival, we at Freak de L'Afrique see it as our mission to contribute to more visibility and recognition of artists from our communities within the music and cultural scene in NRW.
