LORDS OF CHAOS FILM SCREENING
The band Mayhem was at the forefront of the Black Metal scene in Norway in the 1980s, bringing the genre's aggressive opposition to religious and societal norms to a new set of disciples. Their shows were visceral and loud, with members cutting themselves onstage and brandishing severed pig heads for their thrashing admirers.
17-year-old Euronymous (Rory Culkin) fancies himself the most evil metalhead in Oslo, and with his new band, he's dead set on creating only the purest of true Norwegian black metal - no frauds. But when real freaks Dead and soon after Varg join the band, Euronymous soon finds himself caught in a whirlwind of arson, cat murder, bitter rivalry, and suicide. And then things start getting serious.
Director Jonas Ackerlund (an old school black metaller in his own right) creates a confrontational and wry look at teenage alienation, and gives the disturbing violence as much heaviness as the music. A bloody gorefest with the feel of a comedic drama, LORDS OF CHAOS is portrait of Mayhem that even posers will love. Hail Satan.
