**Black Editions Presents: François J. Bonnet and Stephen O’Malley, Chris Corsano / Carlos Giffoni Duo, Ben Vida**

François J. Bonnet and Stephen O’Malley are long-term collaborators around editorial projects like Recollection GRM and Portraits GRM labels & SPECTRES journal. Bonnet and O’Malley initiated their duo project in the summer of 2018 as a commission from the ATONAL festival at Kraftwerk in Berlin. Their first album, Cylene appeared in late spring 2019, and the Cylene Suisse Redux LP in spring 2021 (with production by Jim O’Rourke and Ryoji Ikeda), both were released on Editions Mego. The music of this duo suggests a world at the same time serene and anxious, evoking the calm before or after the storm without excluding, from time to time, the storm itself.

**François J. Bonnet** is a Franco-Swiss composer, writer and theoretician based in Paris. He’s been a member of INA GRM since 2007 and became its director in 2018. He has published several books : The Order of Sounds, The Infra-World, After Death(all published by Urbanomic) and The Music To Come(Shelter Press). He’s the co-editor of the SPECTRES book series (Shelter Press) and the Recollection GRM and Portraits GRM record series (Editions Mego). He also produces radio shows for national radio France Musique. His music, often presented as Kassel Jaeger, has been played in renowned venues and festivals all over the world.

**Stephen O’Malley** is a guitarist, producer, composer, and visual artist who has conceptualized and participated in numerous drone and experimental music groups for over two decades – SUNN O))), KTL, and Khanate being among his best-known creations. Wildly prolific, O’Malley’s oeuvre is defined by its remarkable breadth, complexity and multidisciplinary interests. It includes collaborations with a wide range of experimental artists, including Scott Walker, Kali Malone, Alvin Lucier, choreographer Gisèle Vienne, the authors Dennis Cooper and Alan Moore, Peter Rehberg, Fujiko Nakaya, Jim Jarmusch, Johan Johansson, experimental music research centers IRCAM, INA-GRM (Paris), EMS (Stockholm) and many others. O’Malley is also a vigorous live performer and has toured around the world since 2000. His live performances feature a reverberating fog of electric guitar minimalism – sorcery that challenges boundaries of space and time.

**Chris Corsano** is a drummer who has been working at the intersections of collective improvisation, free jazz, avant-rock, and noise musics since the late 1990s. His work incorporates spontaneously composed amalgams of extended techniques for drum set and non-percussion instruments of his own making that are incorporated into his kit. Examples of these invented instruments include violin strings stretched across drum heads, and modified reed instruments that transform the drums into resonators which can, in turn, be used to incite strips of metal to react to the drum membranes' Chladni-plate-like modes of vibration.

Corsano's 2017 Grants to Artists award supported his travel to Japan to tour with saxophonist Mette Rasmussen; to Berlin, Germany to play with Nate Wooley, and with his quartet, which includes Christine Abdelnour, Okkyung Lee, and Magda Mayas; as well as a solo tour through Australia.

Corsano's solo recordings include The Young Cricketer (Hot Cars Warp, 2006); Blood Pressure (Hot Cars Warp, 2006); Another Dull Dawn (Ultra Eczema, 2009); and Cut (Hot Cars Warp, 2012). In addition to his solo work, Corsano has a long-standing, high-energy musical partnership with saxophonist Paul Flaherty. Their style, which they occasionally refer to with (semi-)tongue-in-cheek humor as "The Hated Music," infuses modern free-jazz's ecstatic collectivism with the urgency and intensity of hardcore punk.

Corsano's dedication to collective improvisation has resulted in his appearance on over 140 records and 1000 live performances. He has collaborated with, among others, Björk (Volta world tour, 2007-8); Michael Flower; Vampire Belt (with Bill Nace); Rangda (with Richard Bishop and Ben Chasny); Paul Dunmall (ESP-Disk); Joe McPhee (Roaratorio); Mette Rasmussen (Hot Cars Warp Records & Clean Feed); John Edwards (OTOroku & Dancing Wayang); Sylvie Courvoisier (Relative Pitch); Nate Wooley (No Business & Astral Spirits); Jim O'Rourke & Akira Sakata (Drag City & Polystar); Jessica Rylan (Load Records); Nels Cline (Strange Attractors); Heather Leigh (Family Vineyard); Sunburned Hand Of Man (Manhand); and Wally Shoup (Leo & Columbia Japan).

Corsano was an Artist-in-Residence at Incubate Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands (2011) and at Café OTO in London (2014), as well as an Improviser-in-Residence at the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, NC (2012).

**Carlos Giffoni** is a Venezuelan experimental musician and writer residing in Los Angeles.

Carlos currently works with modular synthesizers, computer software, and found physical objects to create expressive abstract sonic landscapes.

He is also the man behind the legendary No Fun Fest and the No Fun Productions label.

**Ben Vida** is a composer, improviser and artist. His works explore aural phenomena, durations, language and communication. In the mid-1990s he moved to Chicago and became involved with the city's multifaceted experimental music scene, co-founding the minimalist quartet Town & Country and releasing solo records under the moniker Bird Show. In the Mid-2000’s he relocated to Brooklyn and shifted his focus to electronics and systems based compositions which utilized psycho-acoustics, aural phenomena and advanced synthesis techniques. He also began showing his works for video, text and sound installation in galleries and arts institutions.

Since 2015 he has been composing pieces that combine his interest in experimental writing with his love of singing with people. His six hour performance piece for vocal ensemble and electronics, Reducing the Tempo to Zero, was staged at Lampo in Chicago, the Kitchen, NYC, STUK in Leuven, BE and in Italy at Centro Pecci, Prato. His work, And So Now, was commissioned for the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2018, and his newest piece, Always Already, scored for ensemble, electronics and voices, has been produced in collaboration with the YarnWire ensemble and vocalist, Nina Dante, and has been performed in New York and Chicago.

Besides his solo work he has developed recent duo projects with Marina Rosenfeld, Lucio Capece and Lea Bertucci. Vida has released his music with many wonderful labels including Shelter Press, Kranky, PAN, iDEAL and 901Editions just to name a few.His work has been featured in Artforum, The Quietus, Modern Painters, The Paris Review, The New York Times, Art Review, The Wire, The Creators Project, WIRED Magazine among others.
