Rising stars of the UK and Colombian jazz and new music scenes have reunited for a unique streamed show in the collective Mestizo. Originally due to make their live debut at London's La Linea Festival in April 2020, the performance has undergone a creative reinvention - ten new music commissions are being filmed simultaneously in London (at Total Refreshment Centre) and Bogotá (on the awe-inspiring roof ofPanorámica Sound Works) before being lovingly assembled into one unique stream.

Mestizo is a British Council programme that fosters music collaborations between the UK and Colombia. In September 2019, Theon Cross, Nubya Garcia and Steam Down travelled to Colombia to perform at Bogotá's Jazz al Parque. Whilst there they caught some studio time with members of the city's inspirational independent scene and built long-lasting musical relationships. In the original plan, eight Colombian musicians would then have flown to London and spent time in a studio with Theon Cross and Steam Down to prepare a live show. One year and a global pandemic later, this new phase of the programme continues to build on these connections and share their collaborations with a global audience.

Neither London nor Bogotá, Mestizo is a brand new international local sound that draws on the diaspora roots of the British and Colombian musicians; at one moment filtered through grime, at another via the haunting sound of the gaita. Like their UK counterparts, contemporary Colombian musicians have embraced different musical traditions to create new and refreshing music. Twenty years ago, young Colombians from major cities began to create musical fusions between cumbia and currulao mixed with jazz, hip-hop, salsa, and electronica and transformed afro-diasporic traditional Colombian music.

The Mestizo project has two musical directors: Wayne Francis, aka Ahnansé, of Steam Down in London and Daniel Michel of La BOA and Mambo Negro Studios and La BOA in Bogotá.

Ni Londres, ni Bogotá, Mestizo es un nuevo sonido local e internacional que se basa en las raíces de la diáspora de los músicos británicos y colombianos; por momentos filtrados por el 'grime' en otra vía del sonido inquietante de la gaita. Como sus contrapartes británicas, los músicos colombianos han adoptado distintas tradiciones musicales para crear algo nuevo y refrescante. Hace 20 años, jóvenes colombianos de grandes ciudades empezaron a crear fusiones musicales entre la cumbia y el currulao mezclado con jazz, hip-hop, salsa, electrónica y transformaron la -afro-diáspora tradicional de la música colombiana.
