Chukwu is Toby Ekpunobi, NYC underground rapper, producer, and instrumentalist. His debut LP, Process, is old-school grit and lo-fi exotica samples brought to life with refreshingly raw production. Chukwu delivers with quick poetic shifts, rhyming about the creative process and the search for identity as an artist,. Melodic themes draw from obsessive crate-digging of Nigerian High-Life, Brazillian, and Afro-Carribean musics.
Process was self-produced by Chukwu and mixed with Coleman Hughes (Coldman) and Patrick McGee (Acidhead). Chukwu’s production aesthetic serves the beats to the fullest with a general abandonment of excessive gloss; balancing field recordings of Igbo folk music with hard-knocking 808s and warm synths.
Hood femme narratives over confrontational sounds.
