ALEX SILL'S EXPERIENCES: REAL AND IMAGINARY (EARLY SHOW)
26-year-old, L.A.-based jazz guitarist and composer Alex Sill, celebrates his debut album, Experiences: Real and Imaginary (available May 10). A masterfully wrought, panoramic nine-track collection, the album includes compositions that evoke internal cinema, highlighting the connection between music and imagery. Featuring musical luminaries such as Oscar and Grammy winning composer/pianist, Dave Grusin, the music on Sill's album also reflects his signature meld of influences- for starters, think the orchestral compositional ambition (and deft acoustic-guitar touch) of Pat Metheny; the fluidly virtuosic approach to meter and harmony that marks 21st-century postbop; and the fiery, lyrical technique of guitar wizards like Kurt Rosenwinkel and the late Allan Holdsworth, to whom the album is dedicated. The album was mixed and engineered mostly by Bill Schnee, who mixed (and won a GRAMMY® for it), Steely Dan's Aja, a record Sill has cited as being of paramount influence to him.
On stage at Gold-Diggers, Sill will be accompanied by a peerless assemblage of primarily L.A.-based musicians, including saxophonist Jacob Scesney and Danny Janklow, trumpeter Mike Cottone, pianist Vardan Ovsepian, bassist Benjamin J. Shepherd, and drummer Gene Coye.
In addition to being a guitarist for the official tribute concerts to guitar legend Allan Holdsworth, Alex has received praise from other big names in the guitar world, including Cal Arts mentor, Larry Koonse, L.A. jazz legend, Lee Ritenour, and icon, Steve Vai, who expressed: "Alex Sill is one of those rare, talented individuals that has all the elements in place…He is one of the vital players with the potential to raise the Jazz bar."
