SAMSON TSOY & THE PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA: BRAHMS, PIANO CONCERTO NO 2
We are excited to present the turbulent and radiant Brahms Piano Concertos Nos 1 & 2, written 23 years apart and rarely performed together. These two concerts are dedicated to this special project performed by acclaimed young Russian pianist Samson Tsoy and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Concerto No 1 will be performed at 7pm and Concerto No 2 at 9pm. The performances will be conducted by Maxim Emelyanychev, an outstanding representative of the new generation of conductors.
Brahms started playing music in public as a teenager in Hamburg’s waterfront pubs. He was an outstanding pianist and the two Piano Concertos — composed in 1858 and 1881 — are therefore closest to his being, and amongst the greatest ever written. His music combines the serious and the playful, the intellectual and the visceral. His combination of musical heritage and progressive outlook makes Brahms an overwhelming, often misunderstood presence in the history of music.
Applauded for the originality and intense drama of his interpretations, pianist Samson Tsoy has performed internationally. Active both as a soloist and a collaborative musician he plays in a duo with Pavel Kolesnikov, praised as “inspiration for our dark times” (The Times).
Maxim Emelyanychev is a "superbly resourceful and stylish conductor." (Evening Standard). He is Principal Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and has worked with many of the finest orchestras in the world. He received the Young Talent Award 2019 of the Music Section of the Critics' Circle.
