GOLEM:

Klezmer-rock band Golem was founded by Annette Ezekiel Kogan in New York City, and since then, the band (Annette Ezekiel Kogan, Aaron Diskin, Jeremy Brown, Curtis Hasselbring, Taylor Bergren-Chrisman and Tim Monaghan) has become a leading re-interpreter and innovator of Yiddish and Eastern European music, creating new songs and pushing tradition forward into new territory. Golem is known for its theatricality and fearless wild energy, combined with a boundless love of tradition. The band performs nationally and internationally, from the east coast to the west, and from Paris to Mexico City to Stockholm to Warsaw. The band is at home in venues as varied as rock clubs, festivals, and theaters, and at weddings and parties as well. After self-released album, “Homesick Songs,” they released two albums, “Fresh Off Boat” and “Citizen Boris” on independent Jewish label, Jdub Records. Golem then joined the roster of Mexican label Discos Corason (Buena Vista Social Club) and released the highly acclaimed album, “Tanz.” Golem was featured performing live in Season 4 of “Louie” and on “The Untitled Action Bronson Show” on Vice TV, in the Amazon TV series with Al Pacino, “Hunters” and Netflix’s “Dash and Lily.” Golem is “not your father’s klezmer band, unless of course your father was Sid Vicious” (Jewish Week).

CONSPIRACY OF BEARDS

San Francisco’s Conspiracy of Beards is a midnight choir that performs a cappella arrangements of the poetic songs of Leonard Cohen. Now in their 20th season, the choir returns to NYC for their 9th East Coast tour.

Well dressed in suits, ties, and the occasional fedora, the choir brings an energized live choral music experience out of churches and tabernacles and into the taverns, art houses, and theaters of the Bay Area and beyond. Transforming Cohen’s lyrics and simple melodies into complex 4- and 5-part harmonies, and with a wide variety of small ensemble and full choir pieces, Conspiracy of Beards achieves a sound that is both robust and tender. Drawing on influences ranging from jazz and gospel to barbershop and doo-wop, the unique arrangements that choir members create capture all of the emotion and humor of Leonard Cohen’s original music and inspire audiences to ponder common human experiences like romance, heartbreak, politics, sex, longing, and spirituality.

Formed in 2003 through the inspiration of the late San Francisco performance artist Peter Kadyk, his brother Patrick Kadyk, along with friend and composer Daryl Henline, gathered a small group of friends to learn and sing a couple of Leonard Cohen songs as a tribute. Since then the choir, still directed by Daryl Henline, has grown to over 30 members.
