Beethoven, Cello Sonata no. 4 op 102
Bridge, Melodie for Cello and Piano in C Sharp minor
Rachmaninov, Cello Sonata in G minor op 19
Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason are brother and sister and regularly perform as a duo - cellist and pianist. They also perform with their other siblings - during the Covid-19 lockdown they made twice-weekly live streams from their family home in Nottingham to audiences around the world. Sheku and Isata have successful and busy concert careers as solo artists performing internationally. We are excited they are coming to perform together here at Bold Tendencies.
Isata Kanneh-Mason’s debut album, Romance, drew popular and critical acclaim, entering the UK classical charts at No.1 when it was released in 2019. Isata recorded the all-Clara Schumann disc as a homage to the composer and pianist in the year of her 200th birthday with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Holly Mathieson. From the 20/21 season, Isata will become Young Artist in Residence with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
In 2020, Sheku released his second album, Elgar, featuring the Cello Concerto, which he recorded at Abbey Road Studios with Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra. On its release, it reached No. 8 in the UK Official Album Chart, making Sheku the youngest classical instrumentalist and the first cellist in history to reach the UK Top 10. In 2017, Sheku made his BBC Proms debut at the Royal Albert Hall as soloist with the Chineke! Orchestra, an ensemble with which he enjoys a special relationship, having taken part in their debut concert at the Royal Festival Hall in 2015. Sheku is passionate about the importance of making classical music accessible to all and is an ambassador for music education charities London Music Masters and Future Talent. Sheku and Isata will perform together at the Proms later this summer.
