Considering that he doesn't fit neatly into one genre, the many songs he's written for other people, and the sheer size of his catalog, B-sides and all, where do we even begin? Prince—the virtuosic musician, the cult film hero, the strident defender of artistic freedom—isn't easy to assess in one sentence or a two hour session. Nevertheless, The R&B Club is up for one its greatest challenges to date: looking back at Prince's career.

Realistically, we could spend two hours just talking about Purple Rain. We're going to talk about his pen for sure, because so many artists benefited from it. And we're definitely going to discuss what an amazing guitar player he was, because that might actually get overlooked in the grand scheme of it all. Prince was arguably the most versatile artist of his era. Sonically, he dared to imagine the millennium during the early 1980s. He soundtracked Spike Lee and Batman films. And he reinvented himself constantly: the weirder he got, the better.
