China Crisis, Always You


China Crisis, one of the UK's most distinctive and well-loved bands of the 80's, are back in North America again as they draw to a close their 40th Anniversary world tour.  Chinas’ hits like "Wishful Thinking", “Christian”, “Black Man Ray, "Arizona Sky", "King in a Catholic Style" and "Working with Fire and Steel" were loved by a generation weaned on early MTV, and their live shows have only grown in esteem with the fans over the years.  “Name another band from any era, much less the synthpop-laden Eighties, who can so seamlessly integrate their ‘native’ genre with the joy of gospel, reggae’s addictive rhythms, the horns of jazz, even the down-home strains of the pedal steel with the pure heart of soul music?  They’ve got all the hook of great pop, but the songwriting and musicianship are stand-out in the class, and they’re still putting out incredible new music 40 years on.  There’s simply no one like them.”


China Crisis were part of a wave of new Liverpool acts in the late 1970s and early 1980s, led by OMD and also including Echo and the Bunnymen, the Teardrop Explodes, A Flock of Seagulls and Frankie Goes to Hollywood.  Sharing an affection for everything from Stevie Wonder to Steely Dan, David Bowie, Talking Heads and Brian Eno, Eddie Lundon and Gary Daly created popular music that somehow transcended the "pop" scene they were a part of and has stood the test of time, continually drawing new generations of fans discovering their sound.  With a combination of truly engaging music, a good bit of Scouse humor, and the clear kinship the band have with their fans, any China Crisis show is one you leave happier for having been part of.  This show is a must-see.
