50 years since the release of his first record, multi instrumentalist Joe McPhee’s music has pursued a beauty that balances the fierce attack of European free jazz with a lyrical poetry stemming from Coltrane’s Love Supreme, whilst hinting at the dark roots of his country’s civil rights protests.
Joe has performed and still performs with musicians across all music; Survival Unit, Brotzmann’s Tentet, Dominic Duval, The Thing, Raymond Boni, Andre Jaume, Decoy with John Edwards, Steve Noble & Alexander Hawkins, Evan Parker amongst others.
Opening the show are London jazz quartet Ill Considered. The band improvise on simple pre-written themes or compose on the spot to create deep grooves and plaintive melodies, ranging from whispered chants to monstrous climaxes. Since their formation in late 2017, they have released seven albums as well as performing across the UK and Europe.
Presented by The Jazz Cafe.
This is an 18+ event.
