Mountains and Waves is a weekend of shows celebrating new American music, curated by The National’s Bryce Dessner.

Opening the concert, Black Mountain Songs is a major new work co-curated by Dessner and Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry, celebrating the legendary North Carolina College whose alumni reads like a who’s who of modern art, music and dance.

Expansive and exhilarating, Black Mountain Songs will feature new pieces by eight inspirational, groundbreaking composers: Dessner, Parry, Caroline Shaw, Nico Muhly, Aleksandra Vrebalov, John King, Tim Hecker and Jherek Bischoff, all set to the stark visuals of Matt Wolf by a unique ensemble.

Closing the evening, a performance of Terry Riley’s pioneering In C. Celebrating Riley’s 80th birthday, the piece was recently reimagined by Africa Express in Mali. Musicians from the weekend including Muhly, Parry, and Dessner will take stage for this rendition.

Presented by Barbican.
