Public Records' 2024 Durations festival kicks off with a Peak Oil showcase in The Sound Room, featuring label co-founder **Leech**, dub-bient producer **Strategy**, bass-slinger **Low End Activist**, and local ambient boy band **Purelink**.

Co-founder of LA-based Peak Oil and manager of Chicago label Kranky, Leech \[aka Brian Foote\] has kept a profile as understated as his music. His 2019 release, Data Horde, is both a dissection and carefully-reassembled conglomerate of drum ‘n’ bass, glitch, IDM, jungle, and free jazz. What could be confused and overwhelmed is eerily spacious and exact.

Paul Dickow \[Strategy\], co-founder of the Community Library label, is based in Portland, Oregon. Dickow’s self-aware eye for the nontraditional is evident through his sound, which is near impossible to pin down, though could be considered digi-dub, with heavy reverb, golden hour ambiance, and smoked out space. Such an uncategorizable sound may have at first stood the way of record deals, but perhaps producing a large library of tracks that could only be Strategy was his strategy all along.

If unvarnished emotion and uncompromising ferocity were once opposite sides of a spectrum, Oxford-born and Berlin-based Low End Activist has forced them together and sprung outward a high-intensity, stirring sound defined by moody bass, tense ecstasy, and sweat-drenched basement anthems. Not falling far from its tree, his label Sneaker Social Club is a self-described “modernist hardcore” mix of smoggy UK bass and jungle, with releases from Appleblim, Mantra, Tim Reaper, Basic Rhythm, and more.

Purelink is the Chicago-born, NY-based project of Ben Paulson \[kindtree\], Tommy Paslaski \[Concave Reflection\] and Akeem Asani \[Millia\] which explores "the bioluminescent depths of downtempo, ambient and dub techno," per DJ Mag. Their tempermental tracks are just as blissed out as they are introverted, with fuzzy, floating releases on leftfield labels naff recordings and UwU dust bath.

Friday night's Durations lineup transports us deep into the world of psych, with minimal house from **Moopie**, a moody live set from **Marie Davidson**, dynamic techno from **Umfang**, **Lena Williken**'s otherworldly selections, and globally-inspired vinyl from **Poly-Ritmo**.

Beijing-born, Melbourne-based Moopie is an increasingly in-demand DJ inextricably linked to his label A Colourful Storm, which curates diverse and personal IDM-electronica, dreamy pop, and Japanese free-folk releases. His own sets develop a life of their own, relying on subtle, minimal house and techno full of equally personal melodies that have landed him appearances on Dimensions, Sustain-Release, Tresor, and many more top-lauded lineups.

Growing up in Montreal’s DIY scene, violinist-turned-DJ Marie Davison has become a Grammy-nominated performer and producer known largely for her live sets, which combine drum machines and live vocals. Contrary to the Chicago house, cold wave, and Italo club-readiness of her own tracks, Davidson is a self-preserving artist who more often than not, bids Adieux Au Dancefloor.

Discwoman co-founder Umfang is a Brooklyn-based DJ, producer, and “technofeminist” with an atypically simple approach to techno DJing, where moments of silence speak just as much as the most raucous. Equally atypical are the nightlife experiences she hopes to create – ones which feature all-women lineups and staff, from bartenders to light and sound technicians to the selectors behind the booth – which, alongside her social vocations, have solidified her as a vital voice in the technosphere.

Although NTS resident and multidisciplinary talent Lena Willikens is known for her free-thinking and largely unknown track selections, her unique, holistic approach to DJing is focused less on the micro and more on painting a larger picture – in doing so, transporting listeners inside of it. With nimble strokes, she samples different moods, coloring in every corner of the bizarre, thrilling, and unclassifiable.

Ethnomusicologist, DJ, and festival organizer \[London’s Basket of Light\], Poly-Ritmo blends a vibrant mix of global rhythms and eclectic styles, including Latin jazz, soul, folk, forró, broken beat, and kwaito. After two years as a Worldwide FM resident, she now tours the world, broadcasting her sunny record collection at large-cap festivals and radio shows such as NTS, Jazz FM, Balamii, and Boiler Room.

**Acid Horizon** is a philosophy and theory podcast born during the global Coronavirus lockdowns in Spring of 2020. An unexpected rupture in the order of things brought together the podcast’s vast network of members and supporters. The aim of the collective is to organize a global cohort of friends and comrades engaged in immersive philosophical research and local political action. Acid Horizon joins us in-person for Durations’ first ever lecture program.

Durations wraps up its club programming with two mindblowing live sets, two masters of atmosphere, an IDM-meets-club moment, one of LA's most eclectic selectors, and a spaceship to the universe that is UPSTAIRS.

Rome’s **Luigi Tozzi** is renowned for his contemporary yet timeless take on hypnotic Italian techno; a reputation which has been maintained through a residency at Tbilisi club Khidi. Ambient and dub influences swirl together, forming an aqueous, engulfing solution that permeates the mind and the room around it. His productions lean toward the minimal, finding home primarily on Sweden’s Hypnus Records and Spain’s Non-Series.

Tokyo-born, Beijing-raised, and now London-based **object blue** is an experimental artist who combines techno and sound design to produce deeply-personal live sets, remixes for artists such as Seb Wildblood, and guest mixes, e.g., Benji B’s show on BBC Radio 1. Her avant-garde approach to club music marked her one of SoundCloud’s 10 Global Artists to watch in 2020 as well as landed her as the soundtracker for Vivienne Westwood's Spring/Summer 2020 campaign video.

**Vera Logdandi** is a community-focused Ukranian producer, techno DJ, and audio-visual artist with standout performances at Bassiani, Panorama Bar, and Tresor. She co-runs label and party series Rhythm Büro, which produces a secret festival in Ukraine that sells out annually. She also serves as a co-owner of 22:22 Studio, a professional mixing and mastering service, and runs the Kashtan radio show, which highlights music from upcoming local electronic artists who are unbound by genre.

Public Records co-founder and member of deep house DJ duo Frank + Tony, **Francis Harris**, through his solo works, dives into the sonic swells that articulate our most abstract, and sometimes slowest-moving, virtualities. Through found sound, analog synthesis, and concise instrumentation, Harris transcends electronic music commonalities. His albums act as worlds replete with memory, possibility, loss, and a radiant – albeit tenuous – hopefulness for the future.

**Ex-T** is a cutting-edge, Canada-based producer and affiliate of labels Temple, Garmo, naff recordings, and Lily Record. His razor-sharp productions combine outsider house and breakbeat with IDM and ch/illbient, soliciting dreamy, auditory trips through the “paraworld.”

Andrew “**Lovefingers**” Hogge runs LA’s ESP Institute, a self-reflective hub for genre-defying, experimental music. His own musical influences vary widely, from ‘60s and ‘70s psych, ‘80s rap and hip-hop, new wave, shoegaze, and anything left of center.

Noods Radio resident **Millie McKee** is a heartfelt record collector of 10+ years who shares a far-reaching collection of cosmic, spiritual, psychedelic, mind-expanding jazz, rock, and fusion. She also owns the highly-regarded London record store and label Hidden Sounds.

Closing out Durations 2024, this leftfield lineup is \[literally\] one for the heads.

**Salamanda** is the Seoul-based leftfield ambient duo of Uman Therma (Sala) and Yetsuby (Manda). Also DJs and producers, their live sets are designed as meditations into the world of dreams and imagination. Therma’s and Yetsuby’s full-length albums on Good Morning Tapes, Small Méasures, and Human Pitch as well as their regular appearances on Seoul Community Radio, NTS Radio, and LYL Radio have garnered international praise for their signature contemplative and polyrhythmic melodies.

**Jan Jelinek**’s works deal with the transformation of sounds, translating source materials from popular music into abstract, reduced textures. Bypassing traditional musical instruments, he constructs collages using tiny sound fragments from a wide variety of recording devices: tape recorders, digital samplers, media players and the like. The recordings are processed into repetitive loops that boil the original down to its essentials, the source material becoming indecipherable in most cases.

**Roméo Poirier**, a Brussels-based musician and photographer who also performs as Swim Platførm, creates highly-textured, hybrid digital-analog sound collages. His debut EP, SURFACES, is inspired by swimming pools; the follow-up, Plage Arrière, Greek beaches. His latest, Kystwerk, is a collaboration with poet Lars Haga Raavand, exploring Norway's coast. Poirier’s work combines industrial clicks and complex rhythms to visualize glimmering reflections of water in all its states.

Japan-born **DJ Healthy** has rightfully become a staple in New York’s electronic music scene, running his label, Will Records, hosting his club night, Doghausu, and organizing international party series, Pacific Mode and Sustain-Release Tokyo. His anything-goes dance sets turn the dancefloor inside out through a heady fusion of low-end frequencies and clicking percussion, though he is equally a shapeshifter for deeper listening and low BPMs.
