Inside Voices founding members I.K. David and Paul Burghard met playing open mic nights in Washington. Connected by a mutual love of guitar-heavy, riff-driven Indie Rock and smooth R&B sounds, the two quickly crafted a repertoire of original music emulating their favorite styles.

Inside Voices’ music blends I.K.’s R&B-inspired chords, lush vocal harmonies, and melancholic lyricism with Paul’s energetic and grungy percussion. Last year, the band welcomed bassist Paul Wevers and lead guitarist Lew Calico who add to the music with groovy basslines and glistening guitar melodies. Since then, the Indie quartet has played several D.C.-area venues including Quarry House Tavern, the Pocket, and Pie Shop.

Inside Voices is preparing to release their first single, Such a Shame, which will be out on all major streaming platforms this Summer.

\--Cecil & Delilah are 6 friends making harmony laden folk-rock and dreaming of eco-socialism.

\--Out of the ashes of local pop band Index comes the nü group Static Spray. Joining the Leddy brothers (Graeme, vocals and guitar, and Nyle, guitar) in this new venture is local legend and multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Ben Melrod on drums and bedroom pop weirdo Sebastian Rodriguez on bass. The band blends their influences of local 90s hardcore and glazes it with indie-pop, while adding a hefty dollop of krautrock to make sure that the sound you hear is familiar but undeniably unique.

There’s an almost mythological quality to the world of Juan Pablo Wauters. The Uruguayan-born, Jackson Heights, NY-dwelling musician is best known not for a specific musical style, but instead for the crystalline sincerity that underpins everything he does. From the heartfelt earnestness of his lyricism to the playful rituals of his live shows, Wauters has a knack for fostering community wherever he goes.

A founding member of Queens garage act The Beets, Wauters began releasing folk-tinged, introspective music under his own name in 2014 with N.A.P. North American Poetry and its successor, 2015’s Who, Me? After a several year break that included a long stint in Latin America, he re-emerged in with 2018’s La Onda De Juan Pablo​ and its follow-up, Introducing Juan Pablo. Sung largely in Spanish and steeped in the musical traditions of each country he’d visited, these were Wauters’ most expansive and sonically diverse records to date, tracing both his Uruguayan roots and his travellers’ spirit.

Wauters’ chameleonic songwriting has continued to evolve on his latest effort, Real Life Situations. He’s delved deeper into collaboration, teaming up with Mac DeMarco, Homeshake, Nick Hakim, Cola Boyy, El David Aguilar, and more for experiments in hip-hop, lo-fi R&B, and deft indie folk. Under Wauters’ care, these songs act as coordinates for the peaks and valleys of human experience, coloring the album with his unique shade of realism.

Optimism seemed to come about indirectly, almost in passing, a feeling of being in-between things. I was really mobile at that time, living wherever. Half the songs came through in a week. “Jordan” perhaps the most out of the blue… sitting there as I was on my brother’s couch in Austin. But I guess I don’t think that anything comes from nowhere. Everything is writing to me. A grad professor once told me that masturbation is writing, as long as you’re looking out a window.

I had just discovered, late, Raymond Carver Broadcast, Sibylle Baier (which “Tonight” is more or less dedicated to), Annette Peacock, Richard & Linda Thompson, a short story called “Car Crash While Hitchhiking” by Denis Johnson. I had “Heart Needs a Home” in mind, “The Great Valerio;” I was just really moving through the world, hanging in the shadows of the people I wanted to be. Hoping, looking out, this is Optimism. I was looking for anything.

In 2018, I took these ten songs into a studio in Austin with some members of the band Knife in the Water. I’d been singing with them at the time and it felt right. My friend Ian, who I’d been performing with as a duo for a few years, was with me on drums. “Friends Again” and “Jordan” were written in the process. “Jordan” was such an outlier, I thought: I can’t put this on the album. Then at some point in the recording process, decided to embrace it—the question of whether spiritual themes should be a part of my work—which wouldn’t even be a question now. It’s in everything. But at the time, you know, it was the first time, and so the song kind of scared me, like I was a mule for it instead of its owner.

Boyish was formed by India Shore and Claire Altendahl in 2016. They met at Berklee College of Music when India needed a guitarist for an audition tape and Claire volunteered. Their musical compatibility quickly became apparent and they started collaborating soon after under the name “The Blue.” The duo went on to write and produce their debut project Carnation in 2018, which The New Yorker described as “looking uncertainty straight in the eye in songs that are confident in their musicality even when tackling themes of angst and doubt.” Carnation was nominated for Alt-Country Album of the Year at the Independent Music Awards.

After graduating college in 2019 and feeling the need to start over they changed their name to Boyish. They released their sophomore album Garden Spider on Valentines Day of 2020, which according to Atwood Magazine is “an immersive ten-track indulgence of introspection and inner angst channeled through a colorful, raw indie rock lens,” or as Claire calls it, a declaration of “Big Gay Sadness.” The album has amassed over 4 million streams and the title track “FUCK YOU HEATHER” was featured on editorial Spotify playlists such as “Fresh Finds Best of 2020” and “Undercurrents.”

\--Rarely does modern music earn the badge timeless, but BEL cuts through the noise. Hailing from the small town of Clovis, California, Isabel Whelan crafts nostalgic songs with honesty and attention to detail, occupying the intersection of indie, pop, and folk, while taking cues from the likes of Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell, and Mazzy Star.

After the 2022 release of her sophomore EP, Jet Lag, BEL landed on a handful of end-of-year “Artists to Watch” lists, and is continuing the momentum with new music in 2023. The first two singles, "Are You Okay?" and "Woman on Fire", have received ample support from Sirius XM, Pandora, Spotify, Apple, and several publications. With a 3rd EP underway and her first festival announcement, 2023 is shaping up to be an exciting year of releases and live performances for BEL.

Wallice is an indie pop wunderkind who has swiftly become one of Gen Z's most exciting new voices, known for her tongue-in-cheek, self-effacing anthems. After picking up her first instrument at age 6, Wallice started writing songs in middle school and later played in her high school band, inspired by the lyricism of Thom Yorke, Lana Del Rey and the punky irreverence of Weezer and No Doubt. She also modelled and acted (once appearing in an episode of Frasier) throughout adolescence, with her former actress mother supporting all creative pursuits. A proud college dropout, she attended the New School in New York City for Jazz Vocal performance for a year before moving back to California and connecting with childhood friend marinelli, who helped her hone the wistful indie pop style that led to her rise. A breakout 2021 culminated in the release of her debut EP Off the Rails, her signing to Dirty Hit, her first sold-out headline shows and support tours. Her second EP 90s American Superstar pushed Wallice even further, chronicling the rise and fall of a fictional version of herself. She wrapped up 2022 on a very high note with a gorgeous autobiographical song and video titled "Japan" and a sold out US headline run. Now about to tour Asia and Australia as direct support for the 1975, Wallice is rolling out her third EP while on the road. She'll then roll into a headline US tour this summer before heading to the UK for Reading and Leeds. She has found champions in the likes of Vogue, New York Times, The FADER, BBC Radio 1, Pigeons & Planes, Steve Lamacq, Zane Lowe and NME, where she was named as part of the 'NME 100' for 2022.
