Since their 2012 debut No Passion All Technique, the Detroit post-punk band Protomartyr have mastered the art of evoking place: the grinding Midwest humility of their hometown, as well as the x-rayed elucidation of America that comes with their vantage. Protomartyr—vocalist Joe Casey, guitarist Greg Ahee, drummer Alex Leonard, and bassist Scott Davidson—have become synonymous with caustic, impressionistic assemblages of politics and poetry, the literal and oblique.

The group’s sixth album, recorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, is called Formal Growth In The Desert. And though frontman Joe Casey did have a humbling experience staring at awe-inspiring Sonoran rock formations and reckoning with his own smallness in the scheme of things – as recounted in the single “Elimination Dances” - the title is not necessarily a nod to the sandy expanses of the southwest. Detroit, too, is like a desert. “The desert is more of a metaphor or symbol,” Casey says, “of emotional deserts, or a place or time that seems to lack life.” The desert brings an existential awareness that is ultimately internal.

An observational lyricism and muscular sense of tension and release lie at the centre of Protomartyr's music. The environmental and economic conditions of their hometown of Detroit are a frequent source of inspiration for vocalist Joe Casey - themes that are expanded and extended to create an atmosphere of universal reckoning, driven forward by the intensity with which his bandmates approach their instruments. The results are dynamic, urgent and contemporary. A series of recordings that are equally dense and rewarding.

Formal Growth In The Desert is a 12-song testament to “getting on with life,” even when it feels impossibly hard. “I was trying to find a way forward after some pretty heavy things, without lyrically resorting to, Oh my god, my life sucks,” Casey says. “I was trying to see what was beyond the trouble.” The titles of the two opening songs—the moody “Make Way” followed by the charging ennui of “For Tomorrow”—complete that thought. A filmic sensibility is manifest in the band’s dynamic, spacious sound and Casey’s storytelling, too, whether he’s critiquing ominous techno-capitalism or processing aging, the future, and the possibility of love.

“Formal Growth In The Desert” è il sesto album della band, il deserto come metafora come simbolo, anche una grande città può essere un deserto. Così come per le emozioni, l’aridità di sentimenti, veri e propri deserti emotivi, o luoghi e tempi che sembrano essere assenti di vita. Il cambiamento e crescita di scrittura per Casey arriva in un suo periodo di transizione personale, segnato da avvenimenti forti e toccanti, come la morte della mamma. Ma la vita continua e Casey descrive “Formal Growth In The Desert” come un abbraccio di riconoscenza alla vita che prosegue. Un vero e proprio testamento di 12 canzoni che inneggiano all’andare avanti con la vita, anche quando sembra incredibilmente difficile. Anche la musica della band cambia forma, è più ariosa e dinamica che mai, il chitarrista Greg Ahee, che ha co-prodotto l’album insieme a Jake Aron (Snail Mail, L'Rain), sapeva cosa stava personalmente passando Casey. Concettualizzando la musica, ha reso il tutto "come un film narrativo", grazie anche alla recente esperienza di composizione di colonne sonore di due cortometraggi. Dal loro debutto nel 2012 con “No Passion All Technique” la band post – punk di Detroit, è diventata sinonimo di assemblaggi caustici ed impressionisti, di composizione poetica e politica.

Protomartyr, il quartetto di Detroit capitanato da Joe Casey saranno in concerto a sPAZIO211 martedì 14 Novembre per presentare “𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒍 𝑮𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒕𝒉 𝑰𝒏 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒕”, il loro sesto album in uscita il 2 Giugno via Domino Recording Company.

Uno stile abrasivo che cattura gli ascoltatori in una sinuosa e tenebrosa cavalcata post punk dai testi poetici e taglienti, allusivi e dal gusto letterario, nichilisti, ma volti all’urlo che sa di protesta e nuovi distopici scorci sull’esistenza.
