Il collettivo olandese in rampa di lancio Personal Trainer annuncia il nuovo album “Still Willing”, in uscita il 2 agosto su Bella Union e già disponibile in pre-order. Dopo l’apprezzato primo singolo “Intangibile”, la band ha condiviso il video del secondo, “Round”.

Commentando il brano, il frontman Willem Smit ha detto: “Round è stata una delle ultime canzoni ad essere inserita nell'album. Avevo già pianificato la maggior parte del disco, ma sentivo che aveva bisogno di qualcosa che in olandese chiamerei "een lekker nummertje", ovvero qualcosa a metà tra "un pezzo forte" e "una piccola canzoncina gustosa". O qualcosa del genere. Tendo a volerne sempre una così nei miei dischi”.

Se ti piace la musica pop cinematica, lunatica ed ispirazionale, i Personal Trainer ti accontentano appieno nel loro completissimo secondo album. Essenzialmente il progetto di Willem Smit (che lavora con il co-produttore/collaboratore Casper van der Lans) ha mostrato una predisposizione per l'esuberanza indie-pop fai-da-te e per la sperimentazione con il debutto del 2022, "Big Love Blanket".

Ora, sotto contratto con Bella Union, Willem ritorna pieno di energia con “Still Willing”, un album sfaccettato con brillanti contrasti e melodie vivaci, arrangiamenti effusivi e suoni subliminali, testi giocosi e autoriflessione: in breve, un album pop eseguito con dinamismo, vitalità e fascin

Come dice Willem, questo è un disco alimentato dai suoi stessi estremi: a volte energico e rumoroso, a volte silenzioso e premuroso, sempre pieno di piacevoli segreti. "Quando ascolto i dischi che faccio, la cosa principale che spero è che ogni volta che succede qualcosa, tu dica, 'Wow.' Mi piace essere colto di sorpresa in quel modo su un disco, sballottato qua e là”.

Spiritoso, accogliente e melodico, “Still Willing” è il suono di un istintivo musicista pop DIY che preferisce l'esplorazione e l'intuizione con i piedi per terra rispetto alla premeditazione saccente. L'intento iniziale di Willem era quello di registrare l'album come se fosse dal vivo, ma si è poi reso conto che la sua chimica con Casper sarebbe venuta meno, almeno in parte. “Sentivo che eravamo cresciuti e avevamo costruito una lingua insieme. Solitamente non dobbiamo dirci molto, ma ci capiamo bene”.

**PERSONAL TRAINER**

Le septuor hollandais Personal Trainer produit des chansons qui ressemblent à toutes les sommités de l'indie rock que vous préférez, emballées dans des psaumes pop rayonnants. L'un des faits marquants du début de carrière du groupe a été une performance de 24 heures (!) au légendaire temple de la pop Paradiso d'Amsterdam. Après avoir sorti son premier EP Gazebo sur Holm Front en 2021, le groupe a sorti son premier album Big Love Blanket en 2022. Les années de formation du groupe ont été marquées par une rotation de talents audacieux, avec Willem Smit - le chef d'orchestre et le meneur de jeu du groupe - comme pivot affable. Mais maintenant que Personal Trainer a participé à des festivals tels que SXSW, End of the Road Festival, Great Escape et Best Kept Secret, l'état d'ébullition naissant du groupe s'est cimenté en un line-up stable : avec Smit, le groupe se compose de Kilian Kayser (percussions), Leon Harms (batterie), Mart Boumans (guitare/sax), Franti Maresova (guitare), Ruben van Weegberg (basse), et Abel Tuinstra (claviers).

La signature chez Bella Union marque un nouveau chapitre passionnant pour Personal Trainer, qui était jusqu'à présent une opération DIY tumultueuse. "C'est amusant : lorsque nous avons parlé à Simon Raymonde (fondateur du label), j'ai découvert au cours de notre première conversation qu'il faisait partie de Cocteau Twins, le tout premier groupe que mon père (John Cees Smit des légendes indie néerlandaises Scram C Baby) ait jamais vu en concert ", s'enthousiasme Smit. "J'ai trouvé l'idée amusante. C'est une nouvelle étape excitante pour le groupe. On a l'impression d'être dans une nouvelle séquence, d'essayer de nouvelles choses."

Dutch collective Personal Trainer release their anticipated new album Still Willing on 2nd August via Bella Union. Following the singes “Intangible” and “Round”, today the band share their new single and LP highlight “Cyan”. Additionally, Personal Trainer have announced new UK and European live shows for 2025 to add to their already busy touring schedule. The newly announced dates including the band’s biggest London headline show to date at EartH in February 2025. If you like pop music to keep you on your toes, Amsterdam’s Personal Trainer provide that service fulsomely on their superb second album. Essentially the project of Willem Smit (working with co-producer / collaborator Casper van der Lans) on record and a band live, Personal Trainer showed a facility for DIY indie-pop exuberance and experiment in sync with 2022’s debut, “Big Love Blanket”. Now signed to Bella Union, Willem returns re-energised with Still Willing, a multi-faceted album of shining contrasts and spry melodies, effusive arrangements and subliminal sounds, playful lyrics and self-reflection: in short, a pop album executed with dynamism, vim and charm.

Willem is the epicentre of the band, which originated from impromptu and exhilarating live shows featuring ever-shifting members of different local bands sharing a bustling stage. The live line-up has solidified somewhat but Willem still welcomes the contrast with his recorded work: “When I make the record, it’s me calling the shots. But I can’t tell everyone exactly what to do every second when we’re on stage. There’s, like, shakers flying around or instruments being thrown all over the place, so I don’t have the capacity to control that. And that’s really exciting to me.”

Meanwhile, Still Willing arrives as a fervid expression of Willem’s home-recording and studio methods, tethered to inviting pop instincts and rich with the fertile promise of more to come. Willem doesn’t want to tell you what or how to think about the album but, he says, “It would be awesome if people like it and buy the record, so that I can make another one.” On the strength of Still Willing, he’s fit for the long distance.
