Joose Keskitalo

JOOSE KESKITALO is known for his quirky stage charisma, rough-hewn lyrics and a jangly guitar supported by a harmonica. New Songs for Old Motifs is his first album consisting of original material in English. The songs on range from the wistful to the ominous, incorporating elements from the British and American folk traditions. One can also hear echoes of artists such as Leonard Cohen and Will Oldham. The arrangements are minimal and earthy, creating a quietly mesmerizing album. The song “The Golden Apple” is from the album Happiness released with the Paavoharju collective.

THE GOLDEN APPLE as described by Joose Keskitalo: “In his epic poem the Aeneid, Virgil describes how the gods failed to invite Discordia, the goddess of strife, to a wedding. Discordia arrives at the reception and in revenge throws a golden apple among the guests, bearing the inscription “for the most beautiful”. This causes a great dispute among the goddesses present, which eventually led to the Trojan War.”

Kadonnut Manner plays cinematic, raw, and emotional , that draws its influences from John Fahey school of American Primitive Guitar playing, country blues of Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt and finnish folk music. His music features lots of open tunings, hot syncopation and driving rhythms and experiments with expanding the country blues form with things borrowed from different folk traditions, 20th century classical music and other inspiring sources.
