Van Dyke Parks used to be somebody. Some say one of the preeminent arrangers and pop artists in the world!

Parks was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 1943. He wrote lyrics for Brian Wilson’s celebrated SMiLE in 1966, which resulted in several Beach Boys hits. He went on to pursue a career as an artist and producer at Warner Brothers Records, where he was the head of the first Audio-Visual Department at any record label. His albums include elaborately orchestrated fantasies on interconnected themes and the examination and reinvention of our American Dream.

He acts occasionally — on David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, The Honeymooners, and Jack Nicholson’s The Two Jakes. He has written innumerable film and television scores. And he has authored three children’s books based on American folklore.

His genre-hopping, cross-generational productions and arrangements range from Skrillex to Ramblin’ Jack Elliott; U2 to Carly Simon; and also Randy Newman, Ry Cooder, The Everly Brothers, Peter Case, Fiona Apple, Inara George, Rufus Wainwright, Silverchair, Little Feat, Ringo Starr, Phil Ochs, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Daniel Johns, Harry Nilsson, Sam Phillips, The Esso Trinidad Steel Band… etc.!



Be there to talk him down on August 29, at Zebulon, accompanying the Guatemalan sensation Gaby Moreno, with whom Parks collaborated on the Pan-American ablum ¡Spangled!, available on Nonesuch. The evening will represent Parks’s multicultural obsessions, with music from the Ukraine and Mexico.

Gaby Moreno returns to London to present her new album, Alegoría.

Gaby Moreno is a Guatemalan Latin Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist, who has achieved remarkable success as an artist. She has released 6 albums, with ‘Ilusión’ receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album. In 2020 she produced, co-wrote, and sang the duet ‘Bolero a La Vida’ with Buena Vista Social Club singer Omara Portuondo, the song received a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Tropical Song.

She has performed, toured, or recorded with the likes of Tracy Chapman, Ben Folds, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Ani di Franco, Hugh Laurie’s Band, Mike Garson’s ‘A Bowie Celebration’, Joss Stone, and with Latin artists including Ricardo Arjona, Leiva, Natalia Lafourcade and Jorge Drexler. Her contribution to film and television includes music featured on ‘Orange is the New Black’ and recently she wrote the music for the film ‘Language Lessons’.

On her latest release, ‘Alegoría’, Gaby Moreno showcases a new musical layer to her colourful career, expanding on her artistic expression influenced by Latin music, blues, and folk-rock, with songs both in Spanish and English.
