On the honey shores of Cape Cod in a beach shack, Courtney Marie Andrews found self-love and her voice.  Every morning, she’d walk 6-8 miles around the back trails of an island and meditate on her life, perusing old memories and patterns like browsing a used bookshop. That summer of introspection led her to a joyous sense of beginnings and ends. When she let love for herself in, she therein let the outside love in, too—the summer feeling, the swaying cypress, the full moon, and the possibility of healthy love. This phase came only right after one of her darkest, though, where being alone with oneself was the most terrifying thing you could do. After more than a decade on the road, the Phoenix-born songwriter, poet, and painter finally had the space to process all the highs and lows of a life of constants. She was finally ready to make a record of triumph, while not completely forgetting the years that made her.

C'est le moment d'aimer l'Amérique, tandis que s'affiche partout le visage hideux de sa vulgarité satisfaite. On oublie parfois que cette image-là n'est que le revers de celle que nous aimons, que l'une ne va pas sans l'autre.
Or une jouvencelle à frange nous fixe plein pot sur la pochette de son premier album, nommé crânement « La Vie honnête ». Courtney Marie Andrews a l'air d'avoir 12 ans, en a 26 et au moins une vie derrière elle : plusieurs de ses dix chansons débutantes sont manifestement nourries par la fin et les attenants d'une affaire sentimentale. Native de Phoenix (Arizona), elle est un pur produit de la tradition du Southwest, territoire où la country, celle qu'écoutent aussi les « ugly Americans » (comme dit l'une de ses chansons), se mâtine de folk-rock, voire se panache d'un trait de soul. On s'en voudrait d'encombrer les bagages de miss Andrews, mais disons qu'elle tient d'une Linda Ronstadt qui eût écrit elle-même son répertoire, à la manière de Joni Mitchell.
Pas intimidée par les balises du genre, elle fait bouillir un sang neuf dans ces histoires de fille « un peu seule et un peu défoncée », dans un bar de Houston, chassant un fantôme dont le coeur a guéri trop vite, alors que « certains mettent plus de temps à rompre ». Une voix surtout nous saisit, et ne va pas nous quitter facilement.
